Iris
Kathleen arrived at 8:36pm on Saturday. 7lbs5oz 19.5 inches.
It was a completely
different experience from my L&D with Abbey (water broke, 17 hours
of labour).
Here's a bit of a cliffnotes version of the timeline
woke up Saturday feeling pretty much the same as all week. Discomfort but nothing really out of the ordinary.
2:30pm-DH and I decide to DTD in the off chance that the "sex
jumpstarts labour" thing is true. We hadn't had it in a few weeks
anyway and I was 39 weeks exactly.
I then took a nice nap...so glad I did.
5:30 I start having slightly more regular contractions about 10 mins
apart...and they are quite uncomfortable in the back. I start tracking
them but figure I can still talk through them so don't think much of it
even when they start getting closer together.
around 6:30 We order
pizza and I indulge in two slices but have a couple of painful
contractions and tell DH that maybe things are starting so we should
make sure everything is in order and I tell him if they don't change by
7pm I'm gonna call the hospital and see what they say.
7pm I tell
them they're about 5 mins apart and I can't talk through them. They ask
how far away I live (35 mins plus tack on another 5-10 to drop Abbey off
at my parents house). they say come in and we'll monitor you for a
couple hours to see if you can stay or we'll send you back.
7:45 drop Abbey off at my parents...contractions getting really painful but actually further apart during the drive over.
7:50 arrive at hospital. Three painful cx from the entrance to the
elevator to L&D. I check in, get changed and they hook the monitors
on me. More pain...she says she's going to check me...I joke that I
don't expect much since my water hadn't broke and with DD I was still
1cm when that happened. she says you are at 8cm and about 90% of the
way to 9cm!!!! Cue DH and I jaw drop to the floor. THere will be no
time for an epi which I'm scared of but also happy since I'd been hoping
to see if I could go without one. Nurse is amazing and tells me she
will coach me through it.
Things get pretty blurry after that. I
had another painful cx and my water broke...they tell me to walk to the
delivery room but I take two steps and can't move without
screaming...they sit me in a wheel chair, bring me across the hall,
somehow coach me onto the delivery bed.
At this point I'm basically
an animal...everyone is talking to me, telling me to breath but all I
can do is scream, tried to bite Dh's hand but fortunately for him had
the sense to stop myself....I want to push but I still have a tiny bit
left to go so they won't let me. The doctor finally arrives just in
time for them to prop my legs up and tell me I can push...about 5
minutes later she was out and in my arms.
It was the most terrifying but wonderful feeling to have it all go by so fast.
Iris is a sweet baby. Loves the boob and while her latch is getting
better the damage is already done and my nips are very sore...but I know
we'll figure it out together soon enough.
Abbey isn't sure what to
make of her...she likes her but doesn't seem to understand she has to be
gentle. wants to "hold it" and "kiss it" a lot though
Hopefully tomorrow will be good...our first full day home.
