S/O Religion...help me find one!

Ok, this totally sounds like I'm treating religion like I'm picking out a new car, but it's not like that.  Here's a background.

I'm Catholic and I've really stepped away from the church.  I went to Catholic school from 1st-8th grade and went to mass 1-2 times a week.  I don't agree with certain things like you have to confess your sins to a priest before you get the sacrament of communion, you HAVE to go to church every Sunday or you're breaking one of the Ten Commandments, etc, etc.  I love going to church for the feeling of community, worship, and the sermons, but I don't want to feel forced to go for fear of being banished to hell.  I also don't like the Catholic church b/c it doesn't support gay marriage/relationships and it treats women as inferior beings.

I'm very spiritual and I believe in God more than religion b/c religion is more man made with all the rules and stuff.

I would like to find a religion that I feel comfortable in.  I just actually started thinking about it this weekend.

I don't even know where to begin.  Any thoughts?

  •  @whtrssngrl Where are you? Chicago?  Check out communitybiblestudy.org.  I've been doing this for 5 years now and it's been instrumental in grounding me in my faith and helping me learn the bible and feel more confidant in my knowledge (head and heart) of what I believe.

  • I'm Catholic. I think what GWP said is a good suggestion. A non denominational Christian church might be a better fit for you.In my experience they tend to be more grounded in the bible. Even then you may have to search for a church that fits you. GL

  • Non-denominational is the word I was looking for earlier and I couldn't think of it.  Thanks @SJandVA

@gollywollypog, but do they drill down the Bible and take it to heart word for word?  That's not what I'm looking for.

  • @whtrssngrl so this semester we are studying the book of John.  We have passages and study questions every day to do at home (I'm really bad this year at doing the homework, and that's ok!  They don't care..) and then meet once a week to discuss what we've learned.  The class is broken up into smaller groups called "core groups" .  In my group this year there are women from their early 20s into their 80s.  Lifelong christians, brand new christians, native english speakers, english as a second language speakers and a wide variety of ethnic, culteral and religious backgrounds.  It's an in depth bible study so we are diving well into the word, not just skimming the surface.  But what you get from it is up to you.  Every one has their own story and the job of the class isn't to tell others how to think, but to allow each person to come to a deeper knowledge of the Bible and discuss and share in an organized setting.  It's non-denominational so there are women from many denominations as well as women from different religious backgrounds.  I really love it.  We aren't going to church right now, feeling very discontent there, so until we find a better church fit I'm leaning heavily on this class and another group we get together with weekly for "church'.

  • There are a lot of United Church of Christ parishes in and around Chicago. They're very open minded and I know a lot of ex catholics who are very happy there.

  • I converted from being a disbelieving, disgusted Catholic to Judaism, but I doubt that's what you 're looking for. Have you researched the Unitarian Church?

Ex-Catholic here who loves the UCC church as well. I miss the traditions and cadence of the Catholic mass but that's pretty much it.  I was married in a Methodist church and felt very comfortable there and in line with their beliefs.

One of my first experiences at the Methodist church I was married in was when they hosted a well known gay chorus in my state and invited them to do the music for a service. They closed the service out by singing a stunning choral version of Obama's 'Yes We Can' inaugural speech.  I had tears in my eyes and never once felt that much love, support, and openness in the Catholic church.

My mom works in a convent and I have friendships with many Sisters there.  In conversations with them and their mission, I do miss Catholicism at times.  It just doesn't fit who I am anymore and I think I miss it solely because it represents a time in my life and a tradition my family followed as I grew up.
  • @Sharona1700, I didn't know that about the defrocked Methodist. I worked at Total Child up in Evanston and they're in a Methodist Church that seems very LGBT friendly. The school wasn't affiliated with the church in any way, though.

  • Thanks ladies. I'm going to look into the United option. It sounds like it's up my alley. I enjoyed going to mass when when I was younger, but after growing up and realizing that the Catholic Church wasn't liberal enough for me, I knew it was time to start looking elsewhere. It wasn't until very recently that I decided to really start examining what's out there. I didn't even know where to begin! Thanks so much.

  • We have a Unitarian church here in my town and I'm starting to toy with the idea of see what it's like. I have a student who goes there and he's pretty cool and levelheaded. He told me that Sunday School for the kids is all about exploring all different world religions and youth group for the teens is just a weekly meeting to discuss social issues in the community and the world. I like that.

I'm going to check this out, too, and see what it's about.
