Generic Formulas

We recently transitioned our previously EBF 7mo onto formula, and she's taken to it very well.  My question is whether there is any real difference between the brand name formulas, and the generics.  We first started her on Similac, but more recently she's also had the BabiesRUs generic, and the Wal-Mart generic.  It's just so much more affordable, and according to the ingredients, it looks like pretty much the exact same thing.  Also, are you supposed to pick one formula and stick with it the whole time, or does it matter if you bounce around different brands like we have?

    Generics for most brand names are fine. I will say that Gerber does not have a brand name and there is no formula like it. So, if your babies on Gerber then there is no generic for you. Luckily it's the cheapest brand name formula out there. I can get 2 of the tubs for 40$ at TRU. That makes it 20$ a tub before using any checks and coupons.

    We have been using the Target one since DS was born.  He tolerated it quite well, and we have had no issues. Formula regulations are the same for all brands.  The other stuff is just too expensive!

    @2013mommy Do you use Target Cartwheel?  You can get an additional 5% off the Up & Up and right now they also have a $1 off coupon on their website.  You have to buy in store but it's worth it!

    I have heard good things about the Costco Kirkland brand and are considering switching to it for my daughter. It is half the price of the Enfamil! I am going to ask my pedi about it on the next visit. But for switching back and forth I was told to try and stay on the same one for 2 weeks before switching.

    Yup my pediatrician said exactly the same thing. I have been lucky enough to find a grocery store by me that allows me to use all of my similac or enfamil checks instead of one per container, so my son gets mixed formula all the time. He doesn't care nor does it do anything to his tummy. :)

    Nearly all generics are made by one manufacturer.  We use Target's generic of Similac advance.  Anything by the PBM manufacturer that compares the shelf formula to similac advance is the exact same.  Makes life easier when I can pick it up from Target, BRU, or wherever else I am that has the PBM formula.

    We used Enfamil Newborn and Premium while I was supplementing, but when we switched to EFF I used Target's brand of Enfamil and no issues. The texture/appearance is a little different (think yellowy powder vs. white sand) and a different smell, but no issues. I used the Sams version with my daughter but went with the Target version this time after reading a dieticians blog (linked from thebump.com) saying Target was her preferred store brand. I'm at Target 3xweek anyway so it makes sense for us. And I do RedCard (5%) and the Cartwheel (extra 5%) to stretch the savings so I end up getting the 40oz tub of powder for less than $20/tub in DFW area compared to 35oz of Enfamil for $36.
