January 2014 Moms

Rant -- near tears.

I just got a notice in the mail today -- it states that due to the Affordable Health Care Act my insurance plan has been eliminated and I will not have coverage past 12/31/13.  I think I want to curl up in a ball and cry.  I now have to scramble and find an affordable private family insurance plan for all of us. I'm so bummed because I really had excellent insurance -- $10 co-pays, no co-pays for maternity, $500 deductible which is already met.  I guess I should be thankful that at least the rest of my pregnancy and delivery will be covered.

Mine and my husband's employer doesn't offer health insurance.  My employer has an HRA reimbursement that pays almost ALL of our insurance premiums every month.  Plus I have an FSA and dental/vision plan through my work.  Both of our employers have found it's cheaper for them to pay the federal fines that will be imposed upon them for not carrying insurance for their employees than actually providing it.

Sorry for the rant ... I'm just frustrated and a little panicked.  Hopefully I'll be able to arrange coverage for my family before January.  The baby will need to be seen regularly, plus my daughter goes to the doctor monthly for her ADHD.  My hubby has VA coverage, but does see an out-of-VA doctor for his diabetes for which we'll need insurance for to continue for him to see.  I'm the only one who won't "have" to regularly see a doctor.

  • I'm so sorry ((hugs)) That is such a stressful situation. It annoys me that employers actually choose that option instead of taking care of their employees. I hope that you are able to find something that works for you soon.

  • Thanks all .... was just so frustrated I needed to whine a little bit.  :)  Appreciate the kind words.

  • How frustrating, stressful, and scary. I know at least in NY well child visits are free for infants in addition to vaccinations. So at least there's that. It doesn't solve anything else, but it's a small blessing. Good luck finding something.

  • This makes me so angry!! I'm so sorry you're dealing with this. (((hugs)))

  • That does stink that insurance companies are just getting rid of cheaper plans because basically they will be losing business.
If there is a light at the end of the tunnel in all of this tho insurance companies can no longer deny coverage due to pre existing conditions, so it might make shopping a tad bit easier. I know the timing is horibble and sucks tho. Hope it all works out for u!!!!

Washington already has theirs up (the exchange rates anyway). Been perusing it. There's some options. There will be more info come October 1, though.

  • Terrible news! Sorry for the stress it's causing you. I hope you're able to find a decent rate on the exchanges. I am curious to hear more about how your experience with this system goes, if you're willing to share in the future. It's a shame companies care more about their exec's bottom line than the wellfare of their employees. Best of luck!

  • I'm so sorry you have to deal with this but glad you're due in Dec and not Jan! I know there there are groups out there- not ins but they share the healthcare costs of their members. May be an option for the time-being if you have any delay of coverage or find new premiums to be too much.

  • I'm sorry, that's frustrating! Insurance companies are great at screwing people over. Hopefully you are able to work something out soon.

Although this is sometimes true, in this case it's just her company screwing her over. No one else.
