Re: Measuring Ahead

  • Ultrasounds can be off +/-2 lbs.  I wouldn't put too much stock in it!

Yep. Baby could be bigger, smaller, or average size. Don't let it freak you out.

  • I was told my entire 1st pregnancy by u/s and feel that DD was measuring big -  to my OBs this meant I would likely deliver a 9lb ?oz baby, which to me really isn't big. (My cousins were 10, 11, and 12lbs at birth and were delivered naturally. Those are bigger babies.)

    DD was 8lbs 3oz...

  • I think they said LO was 7lbs at 32 or 34? weeks already. I know I posted it.... Anyway, either way, they feel I will have a baby in the 9lb range.... again. lol Not worried. I already had one 9lbs 2 oz and the estimate is 9lbs 7oz with this one (4 days to go). I know my belly was measuring 7 weeks ahead at one point too. No GD or anything going on. Some of us just make larger babies.

  • My 7lb baby was supposed to be 9lbs. She was 6lb and some change before we left the hospital, so I wouldn't worry.
  • Like PPs have said, it can be really off. We actually have a thread in Sep 13 about it, and lots of people have responded with the estimate vs. how big their baby actually was- tons of them are off.

Also, I measured big as far as stomach measurement several times (it's supposed to be +/- 2cm from how many weeks you are), but then other times I was right on track. I don't think baby growth is perfectly linear- sometimes you gain a little more, other times a little less. It'll all even out in the end. I wouldn't worry too much!

  • At 28 weeks they measured my baby 3lbs 2oz. Who knows... Even if its true it could be a growth spurt and all even out. Doesn't really mean much.

Take it with a grain of salt.  They told me my first was on the small side and he ended up being 8 lbs.  It's a guessing game and rarely are they 100% accurate.

  • I was told at 31 weeks my baby was 5.4 lbs. I almost fainted, wow that is a big baby! and baby has a 14cm head already but in the last month I have gained 1 lbs. I also was told the measurements can be off as the baby was moving so much. We have another scan on the 23rd of october, here is hoping for a small baby as I was told anything over 8lbs or if this head is bigger I have to have a section cause baby wont fit out the normal way.

  • I had my last u/s at 31 weeks. I was told my baby was measuring big at 4lbs 6oz. But since it is hard to get an exact measurement in the 3rd tri they are not worried about it. I was kind of expecting a big baby anyways since my SO has big babies that run on his side of the family and he is a big guy (6ft 4in and 200 something pounds).

  • She measured my belly yesterday and told me I am measuring at 28 weeks instead of 26 weeks.  She said everything should even out.   I was a big baby and so was my brohters and sisters so Im kind of expecting LO to be on the bigger side anyways.

  • Ultrasounds definitely can be off. My DS was measuring big so I was induced just a couple days after my due date.  My Dr. joked saying "you can handle a 10 pounder right?"... Not funny for my 1st pregnancy:)... He weighed in at 8 lb 4 oz.  Still big, but definitely doable.  (And I was a size 2-4 before he was born).  Don't stress too much.  As long as everything medically looks good, chubby babies are a good thing!:)
  • Ultrasounds at 28 weeks are not accurate for guessing gestation and weight.  I really don't understand why doctors even give mother's this sort of information.  Your body will not grow a baby larger than it can handle unless there is another medical problem involved.

Who told you that?  If it was you doctor you need a new doctor.  Unless you have had a broken pelvic bone that has been fused back together or some other serious medical condition that has affected your bone structure that is the dumbest thing I've ever heard.  You can have a baby above 8 pounds "the normal way".  I've attended many births, including one of a 9 pound, 5 oz baby and a 10 pounds, 3 oz baby, both born vaginally and without any interventions or drugs.  And both moms only had a tiny tear that didn't require stitches.

  • With DS I was measuring ahead my entire pregnancy.   The day I went into labour i had a checkup and was informed I should expect a 8-9lb baby!   DS was born that day at 7lb 6oz, so I wouldn't think too much into what they estimate the birth weight to be.

This.  My sister recently gave birth to a 9lb baby - naturally.  she didn't even tear much. Silly doctor!
  • I was measuring 3wks behind so I had a growth scan last Friday and it turns out my LO is measuring around 4.5-5lbs (I am 32wks) But the doc also said that there is a big margin of error and they only 'worry' if baby is measuring in the 90th % and above, and my LO was in the 50-75th%. He also said b/c she is breech that messes with the accuracy, but they got what they wanted and that was that she is still growing and my fluid level is normal even if I am measuring behind.

I don't take much stock in weight guesses from ultrasounds, our only concern with my HG was that my LO was still growing as what they considered a healthy rate.
