April 2014 Moms

Unpaid maternity leave.

I work 40+ hours a week but am considered part time. My husband has very good insurance so it was never a concern of mine. However, now that I'm pregnant I need a new savings plan or something. Who else is in the same boat??

Re: Unpaid maternity leave.

  • Most people, I'm thinking. There's not a whole lot of paid maternity leave in the states beyond whatever sick leave you have

  • When I worked at Barnes and noble I got paid leave. Now at my preschool... Nothing :-( saving if I'm able and hoping for a great tax return check.
  • I'm hoping to "work from home" while on maternity leave.  My situation is kind of weird though because I have a grad student stipend and they don't keep track of vacation or sick leave.  We made sure we had enough savings before we got pregnant so we would be ok on only DH salary but it is really going to suck if my boss makes me take an actual leave of absence.

  • What about short term disability?
  • Nope, no paid leave here either :( I'm in the same boat as you.. Im considered part time and the place I work only has 3 employees so they aren't required to offer any sort of disability or anything. We are saving every cent that we can and will be able to live mostly off of my husband's paycheck, but will have savings to fall back on. And I am planning on only taking 6-8 weeks off :(

  • Yeah at my work 30+ hours is considered full time for us.
  • I have sick leave and vacation time that I have been hoarding since ttc. I will get 8 weeks paid

  • I'm a contract employee so I only get paid for what I actually do... and since I don't plan to do much in the weeks after baby, I won't be getting paid either.  We're going to just save up what I'd make in 6 weeks or so and then that's the time I'll plan to take "off."

  • I run a business with my husband and a non profit on my own. No maternity leave at all for me. Boo. :(
  • It seems like everyone is like ???? When I speak of short term disability. Do I qualify for this being part time? And if so, what are the steps to take?
  • It's usually an extra policy you pay for yourself through your employer. It's probably too late to sign up now.

  • PA doesn't have any maternity leave or automatic disability coverage, so I started paying for disability insurance last year.  I think it'll give me maybe half my salary while i'm out, which is better than nothing.  my company has never had a pregnant employee, so i'm not sure if there's any policy on whether I have to use vacation or sick time.  i'm also fed up there, so i'm looking forward to maternity leave.

  • I'm really lucky. I get 4.5 months paid and I can take another 2 months unpaid if I want. There are companies in the states that offer good benefits.

  • I had no paid leave with my daughter, worse yet husband was laid off when I was 20 weeks pregnant. It was so so hard. I was so broke and only took 7 weeks off. Still paying off the credit card debt
  • I'm self employed, so I don't get anything. However, I haven't put pants on to go to "work" in weeks. :)

My husband gets 3 months paternity leave, which will be amazing. Women who work where he does get the 3 months maternity leave, plus one month pregnancy leave - all paid. I need to get a job there asap....

  • I'm getting short term disability.... I work for a hospital, that's their "paid maternity leave" I don't see why you couldn't take that as well.

With my first it was unpaid. I just pulled a $100 out of every check from when I found out until I have birth.. To cover what little bills I had and spending money.

Yes, when I signed up for my short term disability plan through AFLAC (I got a discounted rate through my teachers' union), you had to be on it for 10 months prior to giving birth for it to pay out for maternity leave (i.e., sign up before you get pregnant).
  • I'm planning on pulling money from each check, putting my tax return toward that as well. DH coaches baseball so we will also be putting that hefty check towards baby!
  • Yeah my short term disability had to be signed up for before I got pregnant. :-(
  • Unfortunately I did not get the chance to think about these things (I should have), but did not think that I would concieve on the first attempt!

I could kick myself for this one. I planned to add insurance through AFLAC at the end of last school year and totally forgot about it... I was in crazy lady wedding planning mode. One month later BFP! Next time.. Fx

This is the same for me. 30hrs is full time.

Where do you live op that 40hrs doesn't count as full time?

Or do you just not get insurance through your job?
