crib or bassinet?

I need some advice on which is better? I feel the crib is just so large to put a newborn in, and the co-sleepers' seem ideal, but then again I've heard some neg things about them too. I would love some input from experienced moms as I'm a first timer! thanks!!

Re: crib or bassinet?

  • I vote packnplay, even though it wasn't an option :)

We have this one and I have used it every single day since DD was born, no joke.  She used it with the bassinet setting for the first 4.5 months sleeping next to my bed.  Then we have used it since then when I am at work and DH is getting ready in the morning.  Totally worth every penny.  I plan on using it again with DS for the first 4-5 months next to my bed as well.

The other plus to a packnplay is that you can pack it up and take it with you for vacations.  We have brought it on a few plane trips and a few road trips and it has never failed us!

  • If baby is in their own room there's nothing wrong with a crib. If baby is in your room I suggest something smaller like a PnP or other type of bassinet. We'll be using a rock n play this time around.

Both. I used our PnP as a bassinet when DS was sleeping in our room, and then also had a crib in his room. DS was sleeping in his crib full time at 4 weeks old. Prior to switching to the crib at night I would put him down for naps in his room just so he could get used to the idea. He did absolutely fine with this arrangement.

We've moved to a 2 story house since DS was born, so this LO will sleep in a RnP in our room for the first few weeks until we transition to the crib, and I'll set up the PnP downstairs.

ETA: We still use our PnP all the time. DS still sleeps really well in it, even when we travel.

  • Neither is better. They all have positives and negatives for your home and your family. We will be using a crib. Sometimes we'll put LO in the rock and play. We don't use a co-sleeper or a bassinet. We like to start LO in their room right off the bat.

  • I used a bassinet for my 2nd, but not my others. Oh, I did use the bassinet part of the PnP when we brought my 1st home. I couldn't lift him, and the room with his crib was freezing.

The bassinet was convenient to have right next to the bed, since my boys were big. But, also with them being big, they outgrew the bassinet very fast. I also discovered that having the baby right next to me, I didn't sleep well. I'd rather watch them sleep, and marvel at how that HUGE thing was scrunched up inside me for so long...

I'm sure this was really helpful.

  • We got super lucky and my aunt and uncle gave us a brand new bassinet that they never used for my cousin (who is now 5). So I plan on keeping this in the bedroom for the first little while and then transitioning into the crib. We also have a pack and play that I might use more for nap time.

  • We're going with a rock n play by the bed for the first couple of months, then transitioning to the crib.

  • Like PP, everyone is going to have a different answer for this---  we're doing a bassinet since we just have 1 bedroom, want to co-sleep, and will be moving within a few months of baby arriving.  IF this was not the case we'd probably have both -- a bassinet for the first few months, use the crib for naps and then transition into the crib after a while.  Using the PNP on occasion, too.

  • My stroller has a bassinet so we got a bassinet stand and baby was in the bassinet beside our bed for a coule of months.  I also had a PacknPlay - this was super useful at first downstairs as I could do diaper changes and put LO down for a nap without always going back upstairs.  When LO was older I had the PacknPlay in my room and then around 4 months he went into his crib (at that point he was sleeping 8+ hours a night).

The PacknPlay is super useful - I used it at playdates, trips to grandmas, vacations etc.  DS slept in their recently when DH and I went on a babymoon.

There is nothing wrong with using the crib from day one.  The reason I didn't was because with BFing every three hours it was WAY easier to just reach for DS in the bassinet then leave bed and go to another room.  Once he was sleeping more I really liked him in his crib.

Really you do what works for you in your place.

  • I had DD in my room in a bassinet/PnP combo for maybe 2 weeks.  I couldn't stand hearing every sound she made and I quickly moved her to her crib.  LO won't be moving around much, if at all, so the crib is not too big.  They will virtually stay where you put them.

  • Im so glad you posted this question as I had the same concern as to which way to go.  Lots of helpful input ladies, thanks!  I was planning on just using the crib, but was hoping I wasn't being crazy.  You've put my mind at ease.
  • I had a bassinet for my first butlike the rock n play way better my second had that and the pack n play is also good because you can use it for longer time.
  • I'm glad someone asked this, and I have a follow up question. How long is okay to use a PNP as a crib? Is it still safe after he starts to pull up? I'm really scared of him falling out since the 'bed' part isn't very far from the top.

  • I used the bassinet in the bedroom for the first 6 months with DD1 then transitioned to the crib in her nursery. I also had a rocker by Frisher Price (lightweight, cost about $40) that I used downstairs and when traveling the first 6 months. DD1 absolutely loved it! I will do the same with DD2 except I may put her in the nursery around 4-5 months. DH was actually against the girls bring in their own rooms and wanted to keep them in our rooms until 1 yo so we will see how this goes :)

This is what we did with #2, and will for sure be doing this again with #3. It was so convenient for nursing. I prefer the r-n-p vs p-n-p bc it's almost like they are being held in there and the are slightly sitting up which I feel is helpful in trying to avoid reflux issues etc.

DD transitioned herself to her crib around 4 months, even though we tried the p-n-p in our room she just wasn't having it.
