Dentist?

Has anyone taken their LO to the dentist yet? What age did you take them? If you haven't taken them yet, at what age do you plan on taking them? What age does your pedi suggest?

Re: Dentist?

  • We will take him when he is around 3. Right now it wouldn't make any sense, since he won't let anyone look into his mouth. Pedi says 3 is the recommended age.

  • I've heard anywhere from the time they get their first tooth until they are 3. DS would not sit for someone to look in his mouth, so I don't see the point. Pedi says to brush with a soft (I use a rubber) toothbrush for now. I do plan on taking him right after he turns two just to establish him as a patient somewhere just in case we have an emergency situation. Pedi suggested we do this.
  • We took DS around his first birthday because I had a question about his lip tie. Our pedi recommends starting dental visits at age 2.

  • We started taking DD1 when she was 2. The first time we went she let them polish and floss. I was totally amazed because she hardly let me brush her teeth at that point. After that first visit, we had two not so great visits, and now she lets them do everything, even x-rays. We are going to take DD2 to DD1s next visit in March. Our dentist doesn't charge for the first few visits. They are really just to get kids comfortable with going. They don't force them to do anything.

  • LO started going at 1 year, per recommendation of our pedi.  They didn't do anything really at the first appt. Just made sure his teeth were coming in appropriately.

He actually had to go again at around 15 months because his gums started bleeding really bad.  Turns out he had the HSV-1 virus (cold sores).  I guess the first time you get that you get a systemic infection and stomatitis (swollen gums and sores in the mouth/tongue).  He was miserable for about 10 days.

He went again at 18 months for a cleaning.

He will be going back for his 2 year check up/cleaning/fluoride treatment (we have well water) in November.
