Maternity Jacket?

cpm1223cpm1223 member
edited September 2013 in January 2014 Moms

It's getting cold here in MA (40's in the morning on my way to work) and I need a new winter jacket since it's impossible to zip up any of my old ones.

Has anyone looked at jackets yet? Have you seen anything that's not completely awful looking and not super expensive? Any BDTD moms with winter jacket recommendations?

I looked at old navy and saw a couple, but I'm not loving any of them...and I hate the idea of spending a lot on a jacket that I'll only wear for around 3 months, but I know I need something!

I either just layer, wear my jacket without zipping it, or when I get bigger, I take one of DH's jackets.
Gettin cold where I live too but this is what I was planning on doing. Couldn't bring myself to spend the $ on a maternity coat unless I find one super cheap. I'm already in DH's sweatpants at home - so why not the whole wardrobe eventually! Haha.

That won't work for me at all. H weighs less than me at this point, and he's only about 4 inches taller than me. Sooo I can't steal his clothes, unfortunately.

Layering could work for me until maybe November, but then it's 20 degrees or less until February.

I bought something like this (I think they've changed it a bit since DS1) last time.  It's not really my style, but like PPs said, I refuse to buy something expensive to wear for three months and I figure it's better than 1) being cold or 2) slopping around in something of DH's.

  • Car seat and I were just discussing this yesterday. Motherhood Maternity had some really good deals on their winter coats and they are beautiful. I live in Canada so I'm definitely going to need something for the winter, but I really don't want to spend the money to buy a maternity coat. My mom is going to see if she has something that might be big enough for me. I've also heard of people going to thrift shops for things like this. It makes sense to not want to pay 100$ or more for a jacket that you will wear for a few months and then be done with it. Even if DH and I have another LO after this one, there is no guarantee that I will need a maternity winter jacket that time.

  • Thank you ladies!

@esd you are right, I will still need the jacket to work until the spring time, so maybe I'll have to look into some non-mat jackets too!

    @LadyJ2949 I'll look at H&M, thanks!!

  • I found a jacket at Motherhood Maternity for $50. It doesn't look too warm though
  • I bought two on clearance right after my BFP... One is a pea coat from destination maternity. The other is a puffer from kohls. I love the one from kohls

  • I'm just wearing one of my husbands jackets. He's got this great northface jacket that I've already laid dibs on for the winter time too. If it becomes necessary, I'll look for a maternity jacket or coat later on when they hopefully will be on sale.
  • I found one at Motherhood Maternity for $70 (it was on sale I think).  It's not the pea coat empire waist style - more of a not too bulky puffy coat but it goes to almost my knees.  What sold me was that I can wear it as a normal coat when I'm not pregnant and it has zippers at the sides that expand the coat during pregnancy.  I think this will come in handy for the winter months post baby as well!

I hummed and hawed about getting something then I was like.... I live in Ottawa.... it's cold here ... who am I kidding I need a coat that fits!

  • I got one for my 2nd child. DH made me use it for the 3rd as well. (both born in March) BUT, I think I've gotten to wide in the shoulders for it, and I'll need a new one :( I don't like getting new coats either. I will pay the money for a maternity coat, though, since I live in Iowa and they are predicting a cold, very cold winter (so, I'm thinking highs in the single digits, windchills like -20 and colder...we have -50 most years at least once).

  • @PBP2002 I just ordered the jacket from Walmart. At that price, I couldn't say no and honestly, the style is similar to all the "warm looking" jacket I keep seeing on the other sites too but it's less than 1/2 the price!

    Thanks for the great find!

  • I have a refuser person coat just in about 2-3 sizes bigger that i wore last time. It's not fashionable by any means but it gets me through Canadian winters. I also have a long dressy coat that has buttons on the top, so above my bump, that I wore for awhile last time. Both are Old Navy actually.

Ive had a November, and a March baby and Ive NEVER owned a maternity jacket. I just wore my regular coats, and didnt button them the entire way.  Im not wasting money on a jacket that will only be worn a few months.

This is my plan... I hate the thought of buying a winter coat for just a few months.

  • I was worried about jinxing myself, but I saw a maternity peacoat on clearance for $20 at Kohls at about 6 weeks preg and went for it.  It's somewhat fitted, flares out under the chest, and hits at the hips
I will definitely need a more casual jacket too, since I do a lot of work with dogs and don't want to get the peacoat dirty.

  • For those saying they don't want to waste money on a coat, do you get cold winters? In NY it gets mighty cold, and IMHO, spending 60-100 bucks to stay warm is not wasteful. Also, I have an office job and need a coat to go out in that looks polished. Can't wear hubbys coats. He is a men's xxl and I'm an xs. I bought a motherhood maternity coat thru amazon 69 bucks and totally worth it.

I'm also of the mindset, when you look good, you feel good, so mammas in colder regions, splurge and get yourselves a coat!

  • I'm going with a combo of a black wool poncho-type coat (non-maternity) plus my nonmaternity coats unbuttoned with a very generous scarf.  I stole the poncho idea from this super fashionista woman at my office who gave birth in February.  She wore warm layers plus poncho while she was pregnant, and now uses the poncho as a fall / early winter coat.

  • FTM here but I also live in MA. I had heard that since we are preggo and tend to be warmer some women wear their regular coat just not zipped. So far I still get cold pretty easily so not sure if that will work for me. For $23 bucks that Walmart one doesn't look bad but not sure how warm it will be. I am holding out on getting a coat just yet.

GL and let us know what you find! :)

I was wondering the same thing! Layering can only get me so far in the winter around here, so I can't just not get a jacket! Also, going outside with a non-zipped jacket wouldn't work either, especially when it starts snowing!

  • I'm in northern Canada. For most of the winter we are at -20 or colder. There is no choice. I bought one for my first pregnancy and luckily have used it for my second and now third as well. Buy a coat. You'll feel good if you do.

I wore an old hooded sweatshirt, that I had to take off before walking into work! The weather this time of year is so weird...it's so cold in the morning, but then I'm sweating by the afternoon.

  • DeEfinitely want to second the poncho idea!  I have one as well and its great.   And looks so stylish.  I had one from last year pre-pregnancy and found it last week in my basement and was so happy.  I got mine from the loft, its an open front one, and might be a nice idea for those in warmer regions who dont have to deal with the sub freezing temps, or at least for these fall days that are 40 in the morn and 70 in the afternoon!

  • I need to figure something out too... If I drove to work, I might be able to make it work with a slightly larger jacket and leave it unzipped, but since I take the bus and can be waiting 15 or 20 minutes for it to show up when it's -30 Celsius, that won't work! And my husband takes a men's size small, and wears tweed pea coats so that won't work either! I am totally going to go thrift store scalvaging. Being due right at the end of Jan (rather than the beginning) makes a difference too, because it means at least two full months of winter weather!

  • It's not a cheap option, but I got this cape-style coat last year and I feel like it has enough room for me to grow into. I'm down in DC and go from my home garage to an underground parking garage for work though so I don't anticipate it being a big deal if it gets to the point where I can't comfortably close the coat. Last year I only wore a winter coat when I went out and used my North Face to go to and from work.

Not relevant to the topic, but this is me.  I passed him up at week 20, it was a sad day.  I had to go shopping for smaller pants for him (down to 152 due to training for a marathon) and maternity clothes for me :(

Haha, you guys have the same sizes as us! Hubby is xxl, I'm xs too, and he's 6'4" so I'd be buried in his coat! And it's totally worth it to spend a bit of money to stay warm and comfortable. I bought H&M pea coat for about $50? (Can't remember) the last time I was pregnant and it was totally worth it to stay warm. I was freezing wearing my regular coat with open front. I'm going to use that and maybe get a puffer jacket if I see a good deal.
