Engorgement and sleepy eater

I had our baby girl on Friday, my milk came in last night. My boobs are monsters which have taken over my body. I remember this from my last child, but I never really feel like I found the right solution. I know pumping only makes it worse, but my boob feels like its going to explode! Plus baby has been soooo sleepy today at all of her feedings, I feel like my breasts are never emptying! I've tried stripping her down, wiping her head with a wipe, changing her diaper...I think the longest she fed all day was 15 min straight! Any suggestions? I dont remember how long this lasts, but I'm hoping not too long!

  • I would pump just enough to help give some relief. I also was told if it's really bad to put a cabbage leaf with the veins crushed to help. Just don't leave it on long.
Ice also helped. I was miserable for almost a week.
    Good luck!!
  • I personally would tough it out and not pump. Your body needs to have time to adjust and figure out what baby needs. If you leave it, it should go away in 2-3 days. You probably remember this too, but you will get engorged several times as baby's needs increase.

  • When I was at that stage, my midwife strongly advised against pumping. She suggested cabbage. She said to put the cabbage right in the freezer. The leads break off easier that way too. She has I could also manually express some just to feel some relief. Only a little though. Dont empty the breast.
  • I could've written this post ver batum. DD is being so damn lazy about eating. She was a champ in the hospital, and has now lost her touch since coming home. My boobs hurt sooooo bad. I'll try some of the advice above and see if that helps. If not, it's going to be a call to an LC, for sure.

  • Cabbage leaves really helped me. Plus hot showers before feeding, or use a heating pad. Especially for a sleepy eater. It gets things going for them.

    Feel better!
  • I was told to pump by the LC because she wasn't getting much (sleepy eater) and she could see mounds forming at the top of my breasts. She told me to pump to empty and boy did I.

  • I'm right there with you with DS being a sleepy eater. It's been a really rough few days. It sounds like you are doing everything you can to try to keep her awake though. I spoke with my LC about this yesterday and, unfortunately, she didn't have any more suggestions. She did say that most babies grow out of the sleepy-eater phase within 2-4 weeks. Until then, you could pump for a short amount of time to relieve the engorgement but be careful not to go too long or you could increase your supply. Just try to hang in there and remember it won't last forever!

  • Mine were like that over the weekend. I stood in a hot shower with water hitting them, then sat on my bed and massaged them for 20 minutes or so, then after dd nursed, I pumped them empty. I know constantly pumping them empty will create a bigger problem, but I figured getting them empty once and then really working on dd to nurse them for long enough would keep up with keeping them more comfortable. It's working so far. She's only nursing one side at a time, and by the time it's time to nurse, the boob is definitely full and firm, but not as rock hard and painful.

  • That happened to be a few days ago after my milk came in. Nighttime was especially painful! Now it's not TOO bad as my boobs figure out what it needs to produce.

What I do is catch the leakage from the other boob as LO nurses. I also gently massage my milk ducts if I'm feeling especially full in order to encourage more to come out. So relieving! I don't want to pump for fear of producing more milk.

So far it's been working well. I get relief and have already started to save my stash. I fill up a 2 oz container in a day. I have 4 already, it's insane.
