Tempers?

Tell me that I am not the only one that is dealing with major tantrums. LO can go from laughing to throwing his body around on the floor in 2 seconds! I have tried talking to him, walking away, holding him, you name it. He likes to stick his butt in the air and scoot his head across the floor into things, when he's mad. He just throws his head around, like it's no big deal.

  • LOL. You've got your hands full! C started that at 18 months....that was fun.  :-q
What is he protesting? Are his tantrums random or are they after he doesn't get something, or meal time or rest time?

  • DD has started to hit and yell when I pick her up because she is walking in the wrong direction or going towards something she shouldn't touch. It is pretty crazy swinging both hands and pounding on me.... It just started this weekend and hoping we can put an end to it as quickly as it started...

  • We are going through the same thing with him throwing himself on the floor. He can't walk because he's so dramatic. He especially does it right before SO goes to work.
  • DS doesn't wave or flail or anything, but he has definitely started pitching fits if he doesn't get his way.

Most of the time, his tantrums are because I take him away from something he shouldn't be doing. Then, other times, they will just be out of the blue.

  • Toddler-ese. It works. Tantrums stop immediately for us, although, you may sound goofy doing it.

Google it. There's a pretty detailed ABC article on it. It's Happiest Toddler on the Block.

  • DS stomps his feet really dramatically and cries (i have to stop myself from laughing) if we take something away from him that he wants. i second @JayandEmm in recommending the happiest toddler on the block. we do the toddlerese, although it doesn't always work. and i try to stop myself from saying no constantly and speak in positive terms- what i want him to do vs saying what i don't want him to do.
  • Charlie only throws fits at home. She'll scream and slam her head on the floor. I just walk away and let her throw her fit and it usually lasts about 30 seconds. I don't know what I'll do when she starts having fits in public.

  • yeah, they are starting here too.  I just ignore the best I can, and am careful not to accidentily reinforce it.  Like, I might try to distract him with something else, but not the item he is tantrumming for.  I think they are a normal developmental milestone of communication, so however annoying they are I am not concerned.
