Natural Childbirth 2nd Time Around

Hi Moms-

I'm new to posting here, but have enjoyed reading posts from many of you! I have a 2 year-old daughter and am due in March with my second. I had the full "work" with my daughter in terms of pain medication, epidural, etc. I am thinking that for this pregnancy, I would really like to go all natural. Have any of you switched methods from one baby to the next? Any advice?

Thanks in advance!

  • I used Hypnobabies with my DS birth, it went out the window at 5cm though, however I do find it very benifitial. I wish I would have invested in a Doula with DS birth... which we already hired one for this birth. I did have an epidural for DS's birth because of malpositioning and exhaustion (18 hours of labor). I am hoping that with a Doula and rebozo techniques we will be able to turn the baby if he/she become malpositioned.

@Nickiechan - I had a similar experience with DD. It was not the birthing experience that I wanted at all. I ended up stalling out, and I got the epidural. It ended up being worth it because for me it actually relaxed me enough to progress. This time around I would really like to try for med-free again, so we plan on hiring a doula. We're also using a birthing center so I won't even have the option unless something goes wrong and they need to transport me to the hospital.
Sounds like the same situation... they gave me the epidural at 8cm because of suffering and exhaustion and malposition with little to no progress after 2 hours... So when they gave me the epi it was 2 hours later I had my son. It help relax me enough to progress and DS turn naturally on his own. I hope not to get into that fear, tension, pain cycle this time around. It is so hard to break that once you are in it.

  • I had an epidural with DD which caused a prolonged pushing phase (3 hours) so I'm planning to avoid it this time.  We are going with a midwife at a birth center.

I really relate all my labor struggles to not having a knowledgeable support person (like a doula), being forced to have continuous fetal monitoring, and being stuck in the bed due to the monitoring.  I progressed relatively quickly (less than 9 hours to 10 cm) and I think it would have been even faster if I could have had the help of gravity too.  I feel like I really could have toughed it out for that amount of time with the right support and in the right setting.

  • I was induced with my first, for high blood pressure, and I went through 48 hours of labor with no pain meds.  I finally gave in and got the epi and it was placed incorrectly.  An hour later they fixed it and I finally relaxed for the first time in 3 days.  No one ever suggested that an epidural might help labor progress, but by the time I got one I was so exhausted they pushed me to get a c-section.  I'm better informed this time around and hope I get to use that knowledge.  I would try the natural labor, but be flexible with your plan and just hope for the best outcome for you and baby.
  • If you are considering a natural birth I would check out the natural birth board. It's great to surround your self with others going after the same goal.
  • I am considering a semi-natural birth, given the circumstances. I will be induced at 39 weeks (Type 2 Diabetic), but last time around my labor went pretty fast so I'll try to go without an epi this time. Everyone was kind of shocked. I wasn't in HORRIBLE pain when I got the epi, but we all anticipated that I would be at it much longer at that point. Little did we know that I was progressing and didn't get the chance to rest anyway like they thought I should do when I got the epi.

I am going to play it by ear. I know not all inductions are the same, but if it seems similar to my last, I may try to skip it. My hospital only does "light" epis anyway, so during the pushing part, you feel it all...

  • I am hoping for a med free VBAC this time. I was med and intervention free for the first 47 hours and made it to 9 cm. I then had to have an emergency csection with spinal after her heart stopped. I think we both were too exhausted.

After that ordeal I'm positive I could endure a natural birth, but the difficulty will be fighting the interventions with a vbac. I'm hoping to take a hypnobabies course (I used these methods with my first) and hire a doula.
  • I have had two natural births...14 years apart and am planning on doing the same this time around too. I'm such a control freak and it is such an amazing complishment when it's all done and over with! It's like "I am woman, hear me roar!" Hee hee! :)
