Pregnant after a Loss

Doppler does it equal more stress?

sparkles98sparkles98 member
edited September 2013 in Pregnant after a Loss
I am thinking about ordering a doppler but I am hesitant because I know if I don't find the heartbeat one day( after awhile of trying) I will think something is wrong.  But waiting inbetween doctor visits is really hard I'm ok for a few days then I start worrying again.  What do you ladies think?  I really don't want to be running to the doctors office everytime I can't find the hb.

Mine is coming in the mail on Thursday hopefully. I finally decided to get one once I realized how far apart my docs visits were going to be. Linzeeh said the exact reason why I wanted it.

  • I would say it does NOT equal more stress. I LOVED my doppler when I was pregnant with my son. It provided that reassurance that I needed - and not only reassurance, but sometimes I just wanted to listen to his beautiful heartbeat and I loved having that available to me. I found that it was SO reassuring during that period of time when you're feeling better and symptoms have lessened but you're still not showing and not feeling any movement. I probably used it the most between 12-18 weeks. Then, as the baby gets bigger, sometimes you get worried when they have a "slow" day movement-wise, so I would use my doppler then too. I just loved it and I will 100% use mine again to any pregnancy I have that makes it that far.

  • I was worried about that too but was able to find the heartbeat every time I used it. So, no it didn't add stress. But the first few times I used it, I was looking in the wrong place and began to freak out a little.
  • Thanks ladies!  I ordered mine and am having it sent by 2 day so I can ease my mind.

  • I was lucky enough to be able to borrow mine from a friend. It has been a major anti-stress tool for me!
I have inconsistent movement still, and yesterday I hardly felt LO at all. I was stressing about it at night, and DH suggested to find the little bugger with the Doppler. I felt 200% better after I found the heartbeat!

  • I am thinking about getting one as well.  I just want to listen to that beautiful noise as much as I can!

A friend of mine told me about this organization that provides dopplers to loss mothers who are expecting.  I am going to try to go through them. It's a no-cost rental situation.

All AL always welcome in my threads!

  • That is pretty much the reason that I didn't even think about getting a doppler. I know myself and I know that it would have just made me stress so much more. That being said, there have definitely been times when I wished that I could have had one to make sure everything is okay, but I made it through. It really is a personal choice though and you need to do what is best for you.

  • I just ordered one today even though my OB will be seeing me every 3 weeks instead of 4, I needed something to ease my mind.

    ~~Everyone Always Welcome~~

  • I didn't have one with my first PGAL pregnancy.  There were two periods that were tough with out it: Between 10 weeks and feeling movement, and again after 34 weeks when LO started to run out of room and sometimes didn't move much.  It was doable without it, but involved some nervewracking kick counts at times and a trip to L&D at 24w when I didn't feel movement.

I have a Doppler for this pregnancy (actually it was bought for the last one, but won't get used until this one).  Mostly I sprung for it bc with DS in tow it will be more complicated to just drop everything and run in for an ultrasound or to L&D.  I figured it would help calm my crazy a bit.

  • I had one and I liked it, but it wasn't a huge deal to me.  I could have lived without it.  But I may feel differently about this pregnancy now that I've had a loss.  I won't break it out until I'm SURE we can find a HB, though.

I recommend aloe vera gel as a "conductant", too.

  • My OB advised me strongly not to get one my last pregnancy.  She said a) a lot of women don't use them correctly (they hear their own HB), and b) when you aren't a trained professional a lot of times you can't find the HB even when it is there and it just causes panic.  So I didn't get one, and yeah maybe there were days I wish I had one, but thinking of even having ONE day where I didn't find a HB and had to run to the OB in an emergency to get checked up on makes me glad I didn't get one.  That one day of terror would not be worth the 50 happy ones where I heard it.

Aww best of luck tomorrow! When I searched the boards reading about this I read a lot of woman didn't find it on their own until 13+ weeks. Keep us posted.

I may have bought one too, it was too good of a price!
  • Mine has been a lifesaver.  I see the doctor every two weeks because I am high risk and I don't even think I could make it that long without my doppler, especially the night before a big appt.

If you get one, you just really need to be patient and know that it can sometimes take a few minutes to find it, especially the first few times because there are a lot of noises in there and it can be hard at first to recognize the baby's HB.  I found the HB around 11-12 weeks....and like I said, sometimes it can take a few minutes, but since I found it the first time, I've never not been able to find it.

You're right around the time that you should be able to find it, but to keep yourself from stressing I would wait another two weeks before you order.  By the time you get it, you should have a very good shot of being able to find it by then.
