  • I kind of agree...i'm working up until 39 weeks. Ugh.  Ya do what ya gotta do...

  • My leave doesn't begin until 3 days before my due date. I was going to work until labor (and still might if I go early), but my boss really wants to have coverage for my department in place ahead of time. I am lucky they are even letting me have leave, so I am being cooperative!

  • Same for me. I am here till the end.

  • I'm working up until the baby arrives - I would drive myself crazy otherwise. Although lately, everyone's freaked out that I'm leaving, and piling the work on before I'm gone, because my backup is very inexperienced. So, now I sorta want to jump ship early.

  • I don't get why people need to defend their choices over and over again. Hasn't this horse been beaten? I imagine people will do what is best for them and their situation.

I am a nanny for an 11 month old (and his 3yo brother) who is into EVERYTHING and the house is not at all baby proofed. I spend my entire day picking him up/redirecting him, carrying him up and down stairs, etc.. I don't know how moms who will have 2u2 do it.. Every day I work I swear I'm going to go into labor with all the bending and lifting I do. I'm not coming back to this job and the extra 2-ish weeks of working are just not worth it.. Sure the $$ would be helpful but I just don't know if I could do this that much longer! ETA: not so much defending myself, as saying, I'm jealous of those who can stay at a job (esp a physical one) till the end!

  • I'm due on 9/28. Still sitting here at work. I don't like coming in on Mondays to the "you're still here" or "why didn't you have your baby this weekend" comments, but I would be so bored out of my mind at home just waiting to go into labor. To each their own though! I'm just so thankful I don't have to stay home/in bed for medical reasons. I really feel for those gals.

  • I think it depends on the job.  I used to work as a retail manager and being pregnant and on your feet all day was pure hell.  Esp at the end.  A desk job, eh...I'm sure as long as you don't have a physically active job you could prob make it pretty close to your due date.

  • I guess I can't really say much since I SAH, but with DS I worked right up until I went into labor.  I think I would drive myself crazy puttering around waiting to go into labor for 2-3 weeks; hell, it's driving me crazy already!

Maybe I should get a temp job to pass this last couple of weeks.  hmmm....

Hahaha I was just trying to straighten out your "maternity panties" over this whole leaving work early deal.  I don't consider 38/39 weeks all that early.

Also, don't you just work PT?

If I had paid leave that would allow me time off before baby without cutting into my time off after, I would take that time and hang out at home like a boss.

    image
well duh YES!  but it seems most people are using up their maternity time to lounge around, cutting into their actual baby time.   which seems, well, shortsighted to say the least.

    image
  • To each their own.  If I was in the position to feel comfortable about leaving work right now, I'm not sure I'd make the same decision to stay until I go into labor.

Unfortunately, I only have X amount of time I can take before I go back to work, whether I take it now or after baby.  Being a STM, I know how precious and exhausting those first few months are, (and how they FLY by) and I want to be able to have every second I can with baby.  I mean, as much as we all gripe now, this is nothing compared to having a newborn to care for, and postpartum aches and pains were worse for me than third trimester.

well geez way to ruin my broad, sweeping generalizations!  heheh

  • Hanging in until the bitter end here, in suits and pantyhose and all!  I don't have much paid leave and need every minute for after.
  • I planned to work until the end, but finding out baby is huge and breech changed all my plans.  I was getting to the point I couldn't do it anymore, but that has more to do with almost 4 hours in the car every day.  I think if I lived closer to work, I would have done a few extra day.  Because of when my c section is planned, I am only off 1 week before anyway.

  • I would love to be able to take off work early but since I'm new here( 10 months) I don't get the chance. I'm here until I go into labor: (

  • I've been off since last Thursday and its been glorious.

I've mentioned before its 100% paid and use it or lose it so I couldn't tack it on to mat leave.

Looking back I would have taken all 4 weeks instead of 2.5

  • I think I've still got a little but of time left in me..but I get why people are taking off at around 37 weeks. With my painful sausage feet and inability to sleep, it's getting harder every day to roll my fat ass off the bed and put on clothes and head to work. Even with my desk job, it sucks with my circulation and pelvic pain. Yes, cue the doggie playing the violin! Lol

I just want as much time with my son as possible, so I'll stick through it as long as my body allows me to.
  • I respect both decisions as I'm sure we all have our reasons. I however, and bored out of my flipping mind being home on bedrest and today is my first official day off of work per dr and boss orders. I found work at least kept me busy and the days went by faster.
If you are choosing to take off early , what's on your to-do lists?

  • I left work "early" because my job was something to get me out of the house and not generate income, so there was no need for me to be working at all, really.

  • I only agree with @cousinvicki on this because I don't have the option to take early leave... but I totally would if I could.

BURN HAHA yes, such a burn!  i do work p/t, which lately is running me WAY over p/t  hours due to an insane project, plus take care of my son -- so i am burning it at both ends thanks. i am not saying it's easy for anyone, let alone the 40+ hour workers/ retail on feet types.   i just know no matter what the situation, my main priority is to spend as much time with my newborn as i can.   IF i did get extra time that i didn't eat into mat leave YES i would take it, but i don't, and i dont think MOST in the u.s. get this--- which was the original point FFS!

I am so jealous of anyone leave already that has jobs that let them do that.  I am just sitting at my desk trying to get comfortable and possibly take a nap.

  • I guess I don't see why this is anyone's business other than the person taking the time off.  If taking time before eats into their time off at the end, then that is their concern.

isn't getting into everyone's business what makes the bump go 'round?

  • I plan on working up until my due date, which is sadly at the end of October! If I had extra time, I'd take it I'm sure. My May leave is going to be partially unpaid as it is. And I want as much time off with the baby. And I work a very intensive job/on my feet. Just luckily haven't had too many problems. I'd be bored at home just waiting!

My dr offered to write me out today (39 weeks tomorrow) and I declined. I'm going to edit my shifts down to part time for the rest of this week, and my last official day is Saturday. I've been toughing it out through the back pain to be able to spend 13 whole weeks with LO. They aren't all paid, but thanks to 2 years of saved pto 10 weeks will be.

  • I've been off since the middle of August due to PTL. Was put on sick leave from work so it didn't cut into Mat leave. Original plan was to finish work 3 weeks before due date. (Middle of Sept.) I Have a year of Mat leave so wasn't concerned with working until birth. Plus job entailed standing for 8.5 hrs a day, lugging and slugging pails of water and a lot of bending. I'm a Florist, it's not such the glamorous and pretty job people believe it is.
Honestly I've been thoroughly enjoying the time off for a change. Makes you realize all the things I've been missing out on by working all week and Saturdays for the last 11 years. I've paid into unemployment insurance all these years, might as well take advantage of it.
To each there own, figure out what will work best in each persons situation.

I just think you should take a step back and quit assuming everyone is being a terrible person and choosing to eat bon bons on their couch all day in the weeks before their baby is born, sacrificing the time they will get with the newborn.  Not every one's leave is the same as yours.  Mine, for instance, resets after the first of the year so I will have a ton of left over, unused time come December 31st.

I like that you say you are burning it at both ends, yet are the board's expert when it comes to all things TLC.
  • Suits and pantyhose at 38.5 weeks here, too. And not even maternity pantyhose...I got two pairs at 25 bucks a piece. After they got runs, I switched back to regular pantyhose, which is super uncomfortable, but at least I don't feel like I am wasting my paycheck when I discover a run!!
