Advice: Should I order the DNA test?

Hey Ladies,

I need your expertise. I’ve been debating on whether or not I should order a DNA test to find out if my girls are ID or Frat. I was told in the first u/s that they were di/di and at my NT scan I was told I had 1 placenta. I have never really believed that first tech because they had a super hard time finding a membrane and had a hard time at every u/s I had. I remember when she showed us that there was 2 in there, it looked like to me, they were in the same sac. I remember her showing us their heads and they almost were touching. She had to do an internal u/s to even find the membrane and even then she had to change the brightness on the machine to ALMOST, if you squint your eyes, see it.

Anyways, fast forward to present day; I call my OB to see if there was a report done on my placenta/placentas to see if I had one or two. All he said was they are definitely not ID. DH believes the OB knows what he’s talking about but I’m still not sure he does. I think he’s taking the di/di and saying, 2 placentas=Frats. I remember when I introduced myself here and posted my 1st u/s pic, everyone said Mo/Mo but Mo/Di for sure.

So, I ask for your opinions. I have posted (if it works) my 10 week transvaginal u/s pic and my 12w6d NT scan u/s pic (baby b’s head is in the pic too) for you to look at. Also, if anyone has comparable ones whether you are di/di or mo/di around these weeks can you post them so I can see please and thanks. I feel that they are ID but I’m having trouble pulling the trigger to order the test. Sorry for the long post, thanks in advance for your help.

  • Sorry, I have no clue how to actually post a picture anymore :( But I think you can click on the link to go see the pic.

  • I don't think it would hurt anything to get the knowledge if they are ID or Frat.  Is it expensive to get the test done?  If not, I would definitely do it.

I know someone who did it with her triplets and even though she transferred 3 embryos during IVF she still needed to know if they were ID or Frat (and in her situation I thought it was unnecessary to do the test)  But definitely not in yours.

  • There is no way that picture on the left is Di/Di
  • As PP said, no way the twins in the first pic are di/di.

I'm of the opinion that a child deserves to know about his or her twin zygosity. Tests are around $100. I think it's worth doing.

  • I am pregnant with di/di twins right now and that looks nothing like my u/s pics. Plus the membrane is clear and obvious on an abdominal u/s! I say get the test done if you are unsure. If thu are ID, your OB is gonna feel stupid! Does he give his reasoning behind insisting they are fraternal?

    imageimage

  • My layperson opinion is that those ultrasound pictures sure don't look like di-di to me.

Have you asked your doctor why he insists they are fraternal?

Also, I'm assuming your girls have the same blood types and look enough alike at almost a year that you feel they could be identical?

But, yeah, I'd probably spend $100 to know for sure.  Just based on the ultrasound pictures, I'd guess identical, but I'm curious to know your OB's reasoning for insisting fraternal.

  • FWIW, there have been a few MoM's on here with bona fide Di/Di identicals.
So, I say go for the test despite what the u/s looks like :)

  • I'd do it if I were you.

  • He never gave me a reason. I was talking with the secretary and I asked if there was a reason, and she just said, he said they are definitely not ID.

  • I'd order the test. It's nice to know for sure! Given your US pic and siggy pic, I'm pretty sure they're ID.

  • Thanks Ladies. I agree, I need to know for sure and I think they deserve to know. Then maybe I won't get those looks when I say we aren't sure if they are ID or not lol. I was searching around on the net and saw a forum of someone asking about what early u/s pics looked like and one mom posted her ID mono/di girls pic (8.5-9weeks) and hers looks just like my 10 week one except in mine you can't see the membrane at all.

  • Definitely mo/di. Your doctor (like mine) is an idiot. Just do the test.

I know you already ordered the test, but my OB was telling me I had di/di twins and my MFM was the one that laughed and showed me why my mo/di twins were infact mo/di. It was OBVIOUS once she showed me. FWIW - I have mo/di twins and my US pics looked a lot like yours. The first u/s they were super far away in one bubble (we couldn't find a membrane) and then the u/s after that looks like your first picture. Am I reading your siggy right, this will be your second set of twins?!

ETA - Ignore me.. I remembered how to read :) I would do the test.

Yours are definitely mo/di and look ID.  I wouldn't waste money on a test.  The hospital medical records department is who you need to contact about placenta pathology.  I think most places will examine your placenta and have a pathologist write a report on it.  I received mine in the mail free of charge.  Here's my identical mo/di boys at 10 weeks.
Edited to add after reading all comments:  I'm glad you ordered the test to prove your Dr. wrong!  It always amazes me that a bunch of MoMs who haven't been to medical school or have been training u/s technology can tell mo/di vs. di/di this easily!

  • Thanks so much ladies!! And thanks to those that posted their u/s pics.

@Mrs. Alice  I definitely want to prove my DR wrong

@pea-kay Ha OB is definitely an idiot

I will keep everyone posted. I'm sure the test will be here by early next week.. the fun part will be trying to get the cheeks swabbed lol.. My girls don't even let me look in their mouths.

  • I love all of the siggy twin pictures in this post so much - Can we start a "post a cute pic of your babies" thread?!?! It would make my day lol

I'm a Di/Di mom and yours are definitely Mo/Di. Even my earliest u/s at 8w2d never looked anything like that.

ETA a 12w2d pic. This is the only other pic where we clearly have both babies in one shot. Two very definite sacs.

Thank you for sharing these. You are right, very distinct sacs. Mine definitely didn't look like that at all. They looked like they were in the same sac even at 10 weeks as you saw by my u/s pics.

  • Totally mono-di! Yours look just like my mono-di twins!
  • Definately look identical to me! I was curious as well and figured I would always wonder. I ordered the test and felt like it was well worth the $100!
  • Def look identical! Mine are Di/Di & I had two very distinct sacs at 7w

  • Based on your u/s pic I'd say you definitely have Mo/Di ID twins. Like PP said they even look alike in your siggy pic. For what it's worth, my Dr. would never tell me whether they were ID or Frat & always said to know for sure we would have to wait till they were born & order a blood test. When I started seeing my MFM, she told me right away they were definitely Mo/Di identical. I have yet to order a test, but I always tell family who think they know it all due to a slight difference that I will prove them wrong one day with a DNA test. Here's my 1st u/s pic at about 8 weeks.

  • Even with di/di twins (both boys), there is still a chance that they could be id.  Depends on when they split.  Mine are di/di, but even the dr won't say they are 100% frat.  Mine are spontaneous so it's not like we knew how many embryos there were to begin with.
  • @lovebumkin That's part of my reasoning for wanting to find out.. to prove people wrong. DD1 had a bump over her eye (hemangioma-- gone now) which gave her bit of a droopy eye (hoping this will fix itself) so everyone is like "they look so different, they aren't ID". Obviously my OB has no idea about twins because mine were also spontaneous so I don't know how many eggs I had.

  • @Amylou333 Mine definitely looks nothing like yours. Thanks for sharing. I am still waiting on the test to get here. Can't wait because I just want to know already lol

Also, how do you put pictures in your post?? I've been trying to figure it out but I've got nothing.

Just copy the pic from TinyPic and past it into the reply window. You no longer need to c&p the code.

  • Maybe I do it the hard way, but I upload my pic to photobucket, then grab the "Direct" link, then click on the little "picture" right here above the text box (its a square that looks like it has a tree in it) then paste the direct link into the box provided, then that puts the pic in my post.

I can't wait for your results!! But I suspect ID for SURE, they look so similar!!

  • Definitely worth getting the test! We have di/di twins that are ID.  We found out when they were 3 months old.  Everyone at my OB office either told us they were Fraternal or that they were 85-90% fraternal.  We just wanted to know, so we went ahead with the test.

My ultrasound pics look nothing like yours either.  But I'd say looking at your siggy pic, they definitely look ID to me! Good Luck!

  • The test is in ladies!! Hopefully will have it out tomorrow in the mail tomorrow!

  • Oh, I just saw this...which company did you use for the DNA test?  I am thinking of testing my twins.
