So... Does the belly button ring eventually need to come out?

I realize I'm older but I can't seem to part with it - and Lord willing, it may need to come out at some point. Anyone have experience with this?

  • My friend having twins said I should probably take mine out soon so that it has time to heal before things start stretching.  I'm waiting until my ultrasound to take it out.

  • I am not really wanting to take mine out either, but know I will have to eventually!
  • I wore a flexible one with my first and kept it in the entire time no problem. I took it out when I delivered but after that I left it out & forgot & it closed up.

  • They actually sell belly rings that are made out of like a flexible plastic I believe, and they are longer so you can wear them throughout pregnancy. Not sure where to get them though.

  • By the end of your pregnancy, your belly button will disappear. I took mine out the day I got my BFP with DS.

  • I guess I'll have to at some point. I've just had it for so long that my belly button looks naked without it.

  • I'm getting one of those flexible pregnancy belly button rings when I need to. I don't want mine to close up.
  • I took mine out halfway through my first and it never closed up so I put it back in a few months ago.

  • I took mine out the moment we started trying. I figure by the time I have my first, not going to want to flaunt that belly ring any longer :)

  • I haven't had mine in for over 4 years, but tried to put one in the other day and it went in fine. So I don't know if it will really close up over 9 months, for those that are worried about that.

  • This is kind of gross but I had one in college and took it out before I graduated. When I was pregnant last time it stretched and would bleed a little at times, even though it was 8 years later and the hole had healed. It was not pleasant.

  • With my first, I left it in until maybe 20 weeks? The hole stretched out so much that it looked like a slit. The hole never closed and it's been 3 years already.

  • I took mine out half way through and the hole never closed. So when DS was born I put it back in. So in a couple weeks I'll probably take it out again.
  • I am not wanting to take mine out either! My DH asked me over the weekend when I was going to take it out... I said NEVER! lol. hoping I figure something out

  • I kept mine in the whole pregnancy - using one of the flexible ones, and put the regular one back in afterward. I wanted to keep it and so I did.

  • I didn't take mine out with my first pregnancy until I was in the end of my 2nd trimester/beginning of my 3rd. They do make pregnancy barbells that are longer, flexible, and more comfortable but I eventually got a point where I had to take it out because it was painful/uncomfortable. I was able to put it back in after I delivered which was nice as I'm also not ready to part with mine. I've had it since I was 15 and my belly looks naked without it!

  • I took mine out during the second tri bc my belly button was flattening out and it kept getting caught on my shirt. By the end if my pregnancy my belly button was completely flat and the hole was widened into a gross looking slit. It closed up sometime during my pregnancy. I had the piercing for several years so I was surprised that it closed.

  • I took mine out around 23 weeks with my first pregnancy bc it started itching and hurting. I never put it back in but I'm pretty sure I still could (my daughter is 15 months).
  • What a great question... I hadn't even thought about taking it out! It looks so plain without it :( I'm going to try the flexible ones and hope for the best that it doesn't stretch out into a huge hole!
  • I left mine in until I was about 20 weeks I think, which was about when I discovered those flexible rings others have mentioned. Couldn't find any locally so I ordered some online, but before they could get here my belly ring started to hurt so bad from being stretched that I finally had to take it out. Never tried to put the flexible ones in, partly because the whole area needed time to heal and partly because I figured it was a lost cause! I've heard belly piercings close pretty quickly, but obviously that's not the case for everyone! :) If you're interested in getting a flexible ring you might consider ordering one now and maybe even putting it in right away so you don't have to deal w/the discomfort of outgrowing your current one. :)
  • I don't remember when I took mine out with #1. Unfortunately between the piercing and my bb now lives my only icky stretch mark so I have no interest in putting one back in.
