Big babies

My hubby was 11lbs when born. Does that mean my baby will be big?

  • not necessarily, there are alot of factors that can make a difference in baby size (mothers blood suger for one)

def talk about your concerns with your dr but just focus on taking care of yourself and eating healthy! :)

  • not necessarily.  i carried big and although i was measuring on track, i had a 9 pounder.  not the same as 11, but still a pretty big baby!  both my husband and i were average sized...  in the mid 7s to low 8s i think.
  • It depends on the amount of space your pelvis and body has your baby will generally fit to what your body can carry I'm 5"6 size 8 uk which I think is a 4 in us and I had a 8lbs4oz baby no bother so don't worry your body knows lol
  • My midwife said take yours and your husbands birth weight and baby should be in the middle. Dh was 8.6 and I was 8.2 DS was 8.4.... I'm sure it's an old wives tale but it happened to be true for us

  • Ouch, I hope not, I was was 8lbs 15oz, and according to my MOL my hubby was a decent size too, I'm hoping for a healthy normal 7 pounder. haha, but I guess we shall see what happens.

  • I was 10 lbs 7 oz, and 24" long when I was born. My husband is on record as the largest baby born in Portland, Maine over a 5 year span - he was over 11 lbs and almost 25" long, and we were both born 2 weeks beyond our due dates. Even with those facts about us, our baby will likely be 8-ish lbs, because doctors now try to prevent too much weight gain during pregnancy, and some doctors will not let moms wait too long after their estimated due dates. Our doctor does not induce pregnancies, but if the gestation reaches 42 weeks, she will send the mother to a larger hospital for induction.

  • It isn't necessarily about mom's diet either though. I ate the same and exercised the same and gained about the same all three pregnancies. My first was 8.1, my second was 8.3 and my third was 10.11. And no GD. First two were four days late and third was six days late. Sometimes babies are just big. Oh and I was 8.8 and hubby was 9.2.

  • Not necessarily.  My husband and I were both in the 7 pound range and DD was 8lb 5.5 oz.  Not super huge by any means (she was estimated at 10 lbs) but bigger than my husband and I were.

  • In my family it seems my paternal genes won. My dad was big, as we're his siblings. I'm one of three- we were 10lb (1w late), 10lb10oz (2w early- that was me) and 9lb13oz (early again). My mom put on ~30 with each, and has always been 5'5" ~130lbs. All 3 c-sec b/c #1 was breech.

DD was on her due date, 9lb10oz. I'm 5'6" 130 and gained 40, but I dropped 30 in 3w, so I'd say whatever extra I put on was water weight. No GD. She was delivered with shoulder displasia, but luckily no damage. This time we're talking early (39w) induction if I want another vaginal delivery or c-sec, because that could have ended badly. Obviously all depending on how large this LO measures.

  • I'm in the camp that believes your body makes the right sized baby for you, unless there is some issue with gestational diabetes or something (diagnosed or not -was that an issue with your MIL?)

  • My sister was 5'3" 110 pounds and had an almost 11 pound baby. She could barely walk but delivered that baby naturally no drugs or anything. She had no reason in either family for the baby to be that big. You just never know!
