Baby Names

Anneliese

I really really like the name Anneliese, but my family thinks I made it up and have difficulty pronouncing and spelling it. My aunt also has a dog named Annie so she thinks it is weird that Anneliese would have the nickname Ànnie.

Thoughts....

We also like Lilah, Rosalie and Grace

Re: Anneliese

  • I don't love Anneliese. It's just NMS. I do like Rosalie though.

They think it's made up? Are they familiar with Anne Frank?

    I think it's beautiful.

  • They have definitely heard Anne Frank's story but I doubt they ever read the story nor do they know that her actual name is Anneliese...maybe if I tell them that it will help?? My family is certainly strange..

Maybe pull up Anneliese on a site like BehindTheName.com or even on the SSA name popularity list.

    ETA: or heck even Wikipedia.org

    What about Natalise?

    Please no.

I like Anneliese. As far as your family thinking it is made up; it isn't so that settles it. If you have an issues with your aunt's dog's name, then don't call the baby Annie as a nickname or don't use Anneliese.

  • I love it! I'm going to see what DH thinks about it for a MN.

  • I think it's weird that they think its a made up name. I know a handful of girls with the name. I like it. I also like Lilah. And please, don't let your family have a say in what you name your child!!

I love this site because I'd rather get strangers input as DH and I decide. We only tell our family when we find out the sex and it's very much "We're having a ___ and  WE ARE naming him/her _____" no discussion! because you can't please everyone and it's totally you and DH decision

  • That is my mom's name spelled the exact same way. She was born in Germany so I always thought it was a German name. I love it and totally thought of naming my daughter Anneliese, however my mom would have made my child birth all about her just because of the name.
  • Anal ease.
This... I actually knew someone with this name and this was her nickname among guy friends in her 20s. Not so nice.

  • The name is NMS, but certainly not made up. I'm kind of perplexed that your family has never before encountered the name. It's not like it's weird.

  • I absolutely love this name. It was one of the names I begged DH to consider for DD, but he wasn't a fan. You don't have to use Annie as a nn. I like Anna much better, or you could just call her by the full name. I don't find it hard to pronounce at all.
  • I like it fine and it's totally legit. I had a friend in high school who went by Anneliese, no nickname. I know several people with babies/young children named Anneliese, at least one of which goes by Anna (pronounced like Ana).

I must pronounce it differently than some people here because it doesn't really sound that much like "anal ease" to me at all.

  • I liked Annalise for DD #1 but DH said it sounded like Anal Ease. Like constipation medicine. Lol so we skipped it;)

  • People will think that about any name that they haven't heard in person. Annaliese is not made up, it has history and it is lovely.

My only reservation about Annaliese is that it is difficult to spell. Even google chrome isnt recognizing it as a name as I'm typing it now. It also sounds like two names put together (giving the "made up" vibe to people unfamiliar with it) and would be hard to match with a good middle name. For people unfamilar with it, I see how it could be like Addalyn or Gracelyn, etc.

I love the name Anne in it's own right. It is an old classic but very underused a first name. It's simple, ages perfectly, and has a certain in-vogue quality about it at the moment. Love the nickname Annie. Also, Anna is a nice name!

Other names you might like: Eliza, Amelia, Annika (yes, it is a real name too), Adelaide, and Lisa.
