Haaalp plz with Caleb's school project

Yes my 4yo has a school project due Monday. I found out about it Thursday and worked 7-4 yesterday. Nothing like giving me some warning. Geez teacher

Ok. Each kid picked a country and has to talk about the flags, what they mean, food and animals and cultural stuff

Caleb has the US.

The land of the melting pot of people and cultures. He had England last year and that was easy but the US?

We are such a diverse group, how do you define us? And be age appropriate and bring a sensorial element into the lesson?

I'm thinking about emphasizing the melting pot of people, pledge of allegiance (teach wants this and asked me to donate a flag for the room. She is from Mexico and just got her citizenship not long ago. It means a lot to her), constitution, the "big" presidents, democracy. What am I missing? Our culture and food is a copycat of everyone else lol. Teach said apple pie, I think she just wants pie :)

And animals! This nation is huuuuuuge with different Eco systems and animals

Haaaaalp!

  • Ugh!  As weird as it sounds, that is a super tough one to tackle.  Good luck.  I think apple pie is good, but honestly, I think us Americans are burger crazy...with fries and Coca Cola of course!

  • @ashleynaka right?! At first the US sounds easy, but then you have to think about how diverse we are and how big we are

Why couldn't he have picked china?! Panda, Great Wall, rice, green tea. Done

  • I was thinking about thanksgiving, and the relationship w the native Americans. Then I started thinking about how we white folk from the UK were a holes to them and such. Do you go there with 3-6yos?

I was thinking about Ellis island and the Statue of Liberty and emphasizing that we are a nation of people from other places

  • Baseball. Good idea! Thanks! America's pastime.

Side note: I'm going to end up doing all this. Sigh. I hate home work

  • Preach it @jfresh! I did it all last year too. No way would I expect him to memorize this stuff. I got a huge poster to put pics up. Even then, it's a bit crazy IMO. He just turned 4. This is the biggest annoyance w his school

  • Um this sounds like a huge project everyone in my school system had to do in middle school. Everyone split into teams of 4 and were assigned a country and had to do a huge presentation on the country, including food. Crazy that they are asking for this much from a 4yo.

As for animals - the buffalo could be a good one. It seems very "American" to me.

  • That is insane. Will you have to stay after school if you don't get your homework done?
