For those concerned about language skills

Thomas and I went to a child screening event today, and I thought I'd share some of the info I gathered.  They ask questionnaires about communication, gross motor skills, fine motor skills, problem solving, and personal-social.  I thought I'd share the questions they asked about communication, since it seems to be of great concern around here.

  1. Does your baby say 3 words, such as mama, dada, or baba? (A "word" is a sound or sounds your baby says consistently to mean someone or something)
  2. When your baby wants something, does she tell you by pointing to it?
  3. Does your baby shake his head when he means "no" or "yes"?
  4. Does your baby point to, pat, or try to pick up pictures in a book?
  5. does your baby say 4 or more words in addition to mama and dada?
  6. When you ask her to, does your baby go into another room to find a familiar toy or object? (ex: where is your ball?  Go get your blanket.)

There were 3 options for answers, "yes", "sometimes", and "not yet".  Yes = 10 points, Sometimes = 5 points, Not yet = 0 points.  Babies who score above 30 are developing normally, they give activities if you score between 20 and 30, and below 20 they refer you for further assessment.  The assessment was good for babies 13 mo 0d through 14 mo 30d.

I hope this helps to ease a few minds, as I know it helped me feel a little better.

  • Dmitri gets a 20.  Yay! Something to bring up to the doctor at his 15 month appointment.  Sigh.

  • Ah! I didn't mean for it to be a bad thing!
  • Yeah, obviously I'm already concerned but this further solidifies it, I guess. Is number 4 asking if they will point to a picture when you ask them to identify an animal or something, or just point or pat objects in a book in general?

  • @elizdg - I asked the same question.  She said if they just try to touch a picture or pat it.  Thomas does it with touch and feel books, and she said that counts.  HTH!
  • I agree with @leilei7369 - I think they all do it at their own pace.  FWIW - she gave Thomas credit for things I would not have.  I was hoping this would help make people feel better, not worse.  Sorry about that, guys!

  • Here's a link to the 14 month ASQ if anyone wants it. Glad it eased some minds. For those who are still concerned, yes it has its uses as a standard measuring tool of sorts, but that is also its weakness - it really isn't a very qualitative measure. You might find your LO not being able to do some of the things it specifically asks about here, but being able to do a couple of the things listed on the 18 month ASQ for instance, or being able to do other things that are just not on the form, but there's no scope for getting that information assessed in a quantitative model. Not saying you shouldn't worry if you think there is cause, but there are limits to the usefulness of any standardized measuring system.
  • Anna is definitely below the cutoff for communication, but looking at the whole questionnaire she seems mostly on track with other stuff. I keep telling myself that a lot can change in the next month before her 15 month appointment. This parenting stuff is hard guyz.

  • I feel a bit better now that I saw the other things he gets points for. Maxed out on motor skills and cleverness.  Boys talk late I guess?  But he's already trying to outsmart me to get into trouble.

  • I think it's too early to worry about whether or not our kids talk. My sister used to work for a 0 to 5 communication program, and she said that a lot of kids only start saying their first words around 18 months, and by the time they're 2, they've caught up on kids who have been talking for much longer.

Let's breathe ladies, as long as we're talking with our kids, listening to them when they babble and reacting to their sounds, they'll be just fine.
