Baby Wearing

Ok so right now we're just TTC but I was wondering, when I get pregnant can I still wear LO (obviously asking just as long as my belly will let me size wise) I wear her to walk the dogs since strollers & dogs do not work for us. I know you're not supposed to lift heavy things but obviously I'll still be picking up and carrying LO so is baby wearing any different? She's only like 18lbs and it's for no more than half hour increments. Any second time moms have experience with this?

Re: Baby Wearing

  • Sorry, I don't know.  But I was curious what are you currently using to carry your LO.  I've used our moby and ergo on occasion before, but it was never a daily thing.  I really wish we would have stuck with it more. But both my carriers always seemed sooooo cumbersom!  I've heard slings are good for older/bigger babies?  But I haven't invested in one.  A month ago DD was 22 lbs and 30 inches.

I'd like to start taking more walks with LO and our dogs.  Right now, its one or the other.

At 20-week anatomy scan found IUGR (Intrauterine Growth Restriction), and very low Amniotic Fluid.  Now, I'm High Risk and have weekly ultrasounds to monitor fluid and growth.  If baby runs out of room or is too growth restricted, they will deliver ASAP.  My current goal is to make it to 28 weeks!

  • When I was pg with ds2, I still wore ds1 in our boba until around 20 wks, them it got painful.

  • I have a baby bjorn carrier to wear her on the front, it has plenty of room to stretch out for the beginning of pregnancy. LO's a peanut, only 18lbs roughly. I walk the dogs probably 5 days a week with her in it. She loves it, kicks her legs and all. We do have a dog park I can take them to and just let LO walk around, but I'd rather save that for later in the pregnancy, I like my walks too :)

Thanks for the advice, I'll probably wear her until my first doc's appointment then double check. And then wear her until uncomfortable :)

The other day I tried wearing LO and a dog leash in each hand, sooooo not pretty. An old couple laughed at me from afar. I can only go now to places where my better behaved dog can be off her leash. I'm only talented enough for baby wearing and one leash. Don't even ask me what we'll do when baby #2 comes...

  • You can look on YouTube there are several videos with different carriers. I have heard Mai ties are good for baby wearing while pregnant.

Your ergo should still work fine. That's what I have and DS is 23 lbs and 31" tall. He loves it just as much as he did when he was a month old. :)

Thanks for the info.  What position are you using now?  I've been trying the side carry since DD is now bigger and wants to see everything that is going on.  I guess I just need to dusk off my ergo and try again.  I really liked the idea of it, but in I never got the hang of it.  DD was always so squirmy and I always had to fiddle so much with the carrier to get it right.  I've only used it on occasion, but I really want to use it more.  I told DD last week that when/if we have a #2, I want to be better at baby wearing from the get-go!

@Ajm11 there are definitely better toddler carriers out there than the Ergo, but they are all still around the same price. DS is really too big for the Ergo now, even though we still use it. We are looking at an ABC carrier, but I'm not certain. I'd highly recommend visiting https://babywearinginternational.org/ and seeing if there's a BWI group in your area and attend a meeting. They usually have all different kinds of carriers you can try on and play with for free at the meeting so you aren't going poking around the internets blindly hoping you'll find the right thing.

  • I have the infantino mei tei (sp?). I don't use it often, but once it cools down a little more I'll be using it when we visit Disney. You can hold them on your hip, and back which seems like it'd work for pregnancy.
  • I swear by my Ergo carriers (I have twins and tandem carried using two).  I wore my middle child in the Ergo throughout my twin pregnancy, and didn't stop until I was too gigantically whale-like to ger the waist strap around my underbelly LOL.

I tried slings and other carriers, but I found that my back tired quite quickly.  The Ergo, on the other hand, allowed me to babywear my infants basically all day long.  I continue to wear my toddler twins (25 months and 30+ pound each) daily, and though I don't think I could do it all day, I can still do it for stretches of over an hour at a time.  If I am wearing just one, I could still pull it off for several hours.

  • We've never been big into baby wearing, but regarding dog walking and baby, I walk two dogs and have DD in the Bob stroller everyday. The dogs would try to pull in different directions at first, but now they've gotten used to it :)

  • I have both KTan and Ergo and use both still. DH likes the Ergo while I like the KTan. (I do the side hip position) As for OP question, I had 3 all a year apart and was wearing them until about 3 - 4 mos KU. But I carried big. I think as long as you feel comfortable and isn't causing problems you should be ok. But of course a quick convo with your OB during a check up wouldn't hurt.

  • I wore A in a back carry up until I delivered I. Not a big thing. you just have to be able to get them into the back carry which can take some talent alone.
