What to do for sick babies?

My twins have a cold and runny nose and have been up the entire night for 2 days straight. I'm so sleep deprived! We've done saline in their noses and I'm using the nose bulb. We don't have a dehumidifier because their Pulmanologist (they were preemies and had to see him to get the Synergis vaccine) strongly recommended against one. Do you have any tips/tricks for sick babies?

  • For my son we did saline drops, battery operated nasal aspirator, sat in the bathroom with him with the hot shower running. He had his at three months...so he couldn't take any meds...not sure how that works at 8/9 months. You could always check with your pedi. Hope they feel better soon!

  • Thanks so much for the steamy bathroom idea! I may call the pedi tomorrow if it's still bad. There's no fever so I felt like I shouldn't call but I guess that's what they are there for. :\">

  • We also do the steamy bathroom thing. It seems to work well for my LO.

  • There isn't really anything you can give them until they are over 2 unless they had a high fever. Colds are the worst and they do linger for quite awhile. Warm baths and the steamy bathroom and just keep clearing their noses. When my son was little the dr had us elevate one side of his mattress also so he didn't lay completely flat and have everything drain to the back of his throat.

  • Thanks @ta78. I borrowed a crib wedge from a friend and that seemed to help a little last night.

  • Thanks @jessalared! I bought some Baby Vicks and also the Vicks plug in! My twins actually slept in longer chunks last night, so something must've worked.  :D

  • I second the crib wedge. Baby colds are the worst!

  • My DS had had a cold recently and my pedi actually said he can take children's Benadryl. I was worried it would knock him out, but he seemed completely normal, not sleepy at all. Plus his nose dried up! I would definitely check on it for your twins!
  • We're going through this right now. I've tried the hot and steamy bathroom, bulb suction and mattress elevation and nothing seems to quite do the trick :/ hoping this passes soon!

  •  I see that you said dehumidifier, which would make the air dryer so I can see why you shouldn't use that, but can you use a humidifier or is that what you meant? The reason I ask is that I have 30 weeker twin preemies who had the Synergis vaccine.  So, I am just curious if there is a reason why not to use a humidifier.
  • Glad it worked for you!

@jessnicolodi I'm not sure I think he didn't want me to have either. It was so long ago and I was so sleep deprived so I really can't remember :( Can you ask your pulmanologist their opinion of this?

Ditch the bulb, get a Nose Frida!  We've been battling a cold for a few weeks and that paired with saline really gets her clear and gets her through most of the night.  We also run a cool mist humidifier to keep the air moist.
Thank you @amnat84 I will look into it. They hate that nose bulb so anything that gets the job done more efficiently would be fabulous!
