Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

overnight diapers

my 1 year old has been waking up crying between 12 and 2am for almost 2 weeks now,  up until then he had been sleeping until 4 or 5am without a wake up. If I don't go in there and give him a bottle he will stand there crying for god knows how long (the longest I've let him go is 30 min). I notice when I go in and check his diaper it is extremely wet and heavy, which I think causes him to wake up. He goes to bed between 7:30 and 8pm, he gets his last bottle at 7. I started using the huggies overnights a few weeks ago, a size up from his usual, and they don't seem any different than regular diapers. Maybe my LO just pees too much at night? Any suggestions for making him more comfortable?

Re: overnight diapers

  • We are using the huggies overnites and have noticed a difference. Before that we would change her before we went to bed. She went right back to sleep once her diaper was changed but, I hated risking the chance that she wouldn't.

  • We had a similar issue, when he would get up in the morning his pj's were soaked. We started to reduce the amount of milk that he got before bed, moved to the overnight diapers in a size up and put him to bed around 7 in a fresh diaper, then before we went to bed (around 10ish) would sneak in his room and change his diaper again (he's a greater sleeper and never woke up).  Sometimes it would just be barely wet, but that seemed to make the difference in the morning overload.  We only had to do that for a short time, and now he is able to get through the night and wake up with a very full diaper - but dry clothes!

  • I found that moving up the last bottle time, reducing the amount by an ounce or two, and then changing DD's diaper again shortly before bed helped.  DD goes down for bed around 8 so I give her a night time bottle at 6:30 p.m. at the latest.  And, using the next sized diaper like you've been doing also helped.

  • I don't know what you were using, but we've always used Pampers Baby Dry and never had an issue. I did see that they make an even more absorbent one called Extra Protection, so maybe try that?
I will say that just because his diaper is wet and heavy, I wouldn't assume that's the issue. I expect any diaper after that long to be wet and heavy.
  • We just started using Huggies instead of Pampers overnights and sized up and it has been life-changing. LOL- a little dramatic, but seriously, everyone is sleeping! But since you're already doing that and he's still waking up, I'd maybe think about what else might be causing it (maybe it's not the diaper?). If you're certain it's the diaper, I'd do what PP have suggested and change him before you go to bed. My son would wake up for sure, but I think he'd probably go back to sleep.

Otherwise, I know some have suggested diaper inserts that you can get at Babies R Us (though I've never seen these). Could be worth trying...

Giving a bottle in the night will just cause another wet diaper so that seems like it defeats the purpose right? Do you have to give that bottle??

    Thanks for the replies!

I know I shouldn't be giving him a bottle during the night, but it's literally the only way he will go back to sleep and stay asleep. The only thing I haven't tried is letting him CIO for more than 30 min. I just can't stand to leave him standing up crying in his crib when he's already behind on sleep from moving to 1 nap at daycare.

I thought maybe because he is learning to walk that that might be affecting his sleep, but it seems like it's been going on too long now.

  • We double-diaper and use the extra protection pampers.
  • We use Pampers overnight and go up a size.
