Yesterday someone mentioned being out with their children around adults with foul mouths. This doesn't bother me at all. I don't shelter and I won't shelter my girls. It is up to me to establish what is right and wrong. I have honest conversations and we will address things as they happen. I don't think telling someone else to watch their behavior because my children are around is okay. If I don't like it I leave or explain what is happening to the girls. But long story short I'm the model of how I expect them to act and behave.
Is it bad that I curse in front of Radley? It's mostly at the TV or when he spits up on me. I don't curse at HIM, but a slip of the tongue occurs from time to time. I need to get that in check before he starts picking up on it. I figure by 6 months I need to ditch the potty mouth.

Yeah.. I'm sort of on the opposite page here. I don't shelter my kids either. I do have discussions with them about right and wrong. But, I do think to a degree people should watch their behavior with children around. Obviously, I'm not gonna take my kids to a huge party that is mostly adults where there is drinking and all that and tell people they have to walk on eggshells around my kids. I wouldn't take them. But, my MIL had the sort of idea that, they're gonna figure it all out someday anyway.. so the way my husband grew up is NOT the way my children will. Example, I had a small backyard bbq sort of birthday party for DD2, his family came. They are sitting outside dropping constant F bombs and talking about their wild vacation they just came back from, with explicit details. I did tell them, there are children around, and you need to watch your mouth. I don't think that's being unreasonable or sheltering my kids. I think that's expecting people to act respectfully and know that children are just that, children. And, they don't need to be exposed to certain things.
@tiffletons518 of course at a children's function but I'm mainly speaking about out at dinner or whatever. And for flucks sake who drops F bombs at a kids bday party lol?!
I think cursing is annoying, period. Call me a prude. Meh.
When it comes to my kids, though, it's not expecting too much of others to make it through dinner at a kid-friendly establishment without hearing a barrage of "Aww F" this and "F" that. Self-awareness and respect for others are behaviors I hope to model for my kids.
But yeah, bring your kid to a sports bar on game day and expect clean language? LOL

@JANCANDANCE my in laws. Lol. They are a rowdy group.

Prude :9 personally I see nothing wrong with swearing. I think there are worse words a child will learn and say to someone, such as "look, she's fat!"
@Achae I agree that there are much more hurtful things a child could learn to say. I just feel like language can be such a beautiful art and constant swearing displays a lack of creativity. But hey, freedom of speech and all that.
I don't have an issue with the multiple pictures as much as I have an issue with mobile people not deleting the small pic or asking "why is this sideways, can't figure it out" when @CarolynL8 has explained it like 80 million times...
I love well-placed profanity. My son rolls his eyes at me and tells me to watch my mouth. Something caught him off guard recently so he blurted out "What the heck!?!" and I laughed because he wouldn't say "hell".
I like that the UO thread is really just a way to find out how many people agree with your opinions ;-) My UO - I want to have more kids in the future, but I feel really guilty for thinking that it almost wouldn't be worth it if I have to go through another c/s - because next time it'll be that recovery plus a toddler.
@jancandance I'm the same way! When we're all watching football the guys get super rowdy and are constantly apologizing for cursing around Ella. My point of view, and I tell them this every time is, this is an adult function, you don't need to change your behaviors because of Ella, I brought her here knowing that the worst things that could happen would be an f-bomb, it's my responsibility to take her out of the situation if I don't agree with it. That said, I am trying to break hubs f-bomb habit, he only says them while watching football.
This. I don't expect people to change their behavior. It is my responsibility to teach my children right from wrong.
However, having a purely adult conversation at a kids function is a totally different story. Hearing a curse word is different than describing something explicit. Where I will teach my children that curse words are not nice to say, I don't want them to be raised where sex isn't something they should talk about at all, but rather at a right time.
I sort of feel the same way about curse words. I personally don't swear. I find that my random facial expressions and talking with my hands can convey just as much emotion as dropping an f bomb. And, just like you say that sex isn't something that shouldn't be talked about, just at an appropriate time and place. If you choose to swear, more power to you. But, I feel the time and place isn't around kids. Again, if you take your kids to an all adult function, then no. They shouldn't be expected to behave differently. You don't want them around it, leave them at home. But, I don't swear around my children and I don't appreciate when other people do it either.

It's really not that bad, I've done it twice and only had help the first week and after that I was on my own. I had easy to fix things for them to eat and juice boxes.
@jancandance - Lily doesn't have a chance. I try to watch my language. That fails. I cuss like a sailor sometimes. H does too. She'll be around much more explicit and disturbing conversation around H's family as they don't mind talking sex in a restaurant. It gets interesting. So, I agree with you. It's up to me to teach Lily how to act and how not to. It's not up to others to monitor themselves around her. She's my kid.
Oh, I need a UO. I want to wake Lily up so bad before I go to work and when I come home. I do sometimes when H isn't watching. I like to spend time with her.

Ditto - I still don't understand why it's normal on mobile but not on the computer (and @carolynl8 doesn't either!) And mobile won't let me delete the little pic either, sorry
I have a pretty foul mouth (as does 99% of my family), but as an adult, I think it's a common courtesy to tone it down while children are around no matter where you are.
Some people aren't courteous though and I have no problem removing my kids from those situations, or kicking someone's ass out of my house.
Are you on an iphone? I don't know if it matters, but after you post your reply if you click on the tiny pic you can delete it. You can't delete it before you post the reply. I don't mind people having the issue of it being sideways on the computer (because mine do that too when I post from mobile), but the people who say they can't insert image or ask how bother me because it's been discussed at length. Horay! I posted an opinion that was actually unpopular
I have the hardest time thinking of a uo on Thursdays!
I don't care if ppl post more than one pic, i like looking at everyone's cuties!
I also don't care if the little one is deleted or not... But I don't like when the little one is the only one posted cause it's hard to see.
I have never really thought about being sensitive to others swearing in public around ds... Maybe cause he's not old enough to repeat them yet? I still swear sometimes and DH always asks me to watch my mouth...
Speaking of swearing in public, it makes me livid if someone is smoking near my baby... I don't care where we are, it's so gross and even if we are on the side walk where they have every right to smoke I totally give them stink eye!
My UO is that I hate when people ride their bike in the road when there is a perfectly fine sidewalk 4 feet away
Bikes are supposed to be ridden on the streets, not sidewalks. At least it's the law for my city, not sure if it's a broader thing!
Same here. I hate to see bikes on the sidewalks, I've seen too many pedestrians taken out by a cyclist who's trying to avoid someone else. Most delivery people are on bikes around here and half the time they're on a schedule and in a big rush.
It makes me insane when cyclists don't follow basic traffic laws, especially when running lights and then screaming at people in the crosswalks, it makes me equally insane when drivers are total dicks to cyclists on the road who have every right to be there. i admire people who bike down NYC streets, it looks terrifying!
Multiple people have suggested to me to start using/smoking/ingesting marijuana because of my long standing sleeping issues. I have considered it - but I am scared. It is legal in my state.
FTR - I don't breastfeed.
The only problem is you wake up with crazy dry mouth and sugary juice is the only cure

I'd probably end up being crazy paranoid and crawl into Lilly's crib with her to make sure she's sleeping soundly.

I wouldn't, just like I wouldn't smoke cigarettes around/in the same house as my baby... The smoke is unhealthy to breathe... I'm also just not a big fan of it in general, especially having to be responsible for a child... I don't think it's a smart choice.
Edit: that sounds kinda harsh, didn't mean for it too... Just my opinion for my life now having been around it a lot in the past.
*Expecting flames for this one* I can't take the cursing in front of kids uo seriously when the posters next sentence talks about physical violence. So a stranger dropping an eff-bomb in public is wrong, but you saying you'd like to hit that stranger is okay?
It was me that posted the original post and I forget sometimes on here that none of you know me in real life. I would never resort to physical violence ever in any situation (unless it was to protect my kids from phyical violence). I guess I should have chose different words to vent my frustration and annoyance at the situation.
My uo is that pedestrians should not always have right of way. I think if people don't look when walking thru a parking lot, I should be allowed to hit them and not get in trouble. I drive slow thru parking lots anyway and always let people thru but it drives me crazy when people don't even look before entering the street. i have had to hit the brakes way to many times to avoid some idiot who's walking in between cars and looking down at a cell phone.
I think a little nudge with my car would teach them to look both ways.

A creepy spider I saw crawl across my floor and under the couch i was sitting on while my baby was sleeping on my lap.
I then frantically took said sleeping baby upstairs since I couldn't find the spider!
Yeah yeah it's sideways...
Then I went downstairs once baby was awake and LO and behold our creepy friend was right by the changing table where we were!
And I smashed it to save my young.
Ok there's all kinds of screw ups posting these pics on iPhone, now lets see if I can delete the thumbnails once I post. Sorry for all the pics @achae.
