Dental hygienists: advice needed

I noticed we have several DH on this board, so I have a question for you all. I'm going to visit my ILs next week, and my MIL (a dentist) is going to do some work on me. For sure I'll be having a cleaning & my sealant replaced, but there could be fillings involved. I won't have my ultrasound & first Dr. appointment until we get back, so we've chosen not to share the news at this visit. Is there any risk to not telling them about my pregnancy before having who knows what dental work done? For what it's worth, she did my last fillings without anesthetic, which I'll probably try to do again.

Re: Dental hygienists: advice needed

  • Cleanings and sealants are fine. Dental work is ideally not done in 1st tri, and lidocaine is a category B med, if that is the anesthetic she'll be using. And different dentists have different preferences on what work they would/would not do. But, if she is not going to use anesthesia then I would say it's fine.

  • I agree with @melissamello

Cleaning and sealants are fine. In fact routine dental cleanings are highly recommended during pregnancy. My biggest concern would be the anesthetic but if you think you can get by without than its not an issue. I would also avoid xrays.

Even though you won't have had your first appt yet you could always call and speak with a nurse and see what they suggest.

  • We do work on pregnant women in the first trimester and use the anesthetic. I would do it if it was me. We consider it safe.
  • My dentist won't do any fillings until the 2nd trimester.
  • I ran into this the other day. My dentist wouldn't do my cleaning until after the first trimester. Apparently the bacteria cleaned from under your gums can potentially infect the baby if you swallow it. I rescheduled my appointment for the second trimester.
