Flu and H1N1 vaccine

What are ur ladies thoughts on these vaccines. I don't really believe in putting this stuff in my body. I have never had more then a cold durian flu season. The doc it pushing these. Trying to get some other thought and doing some reasearch. Thx!

Pregnant women are more likely to be hospitalized and die from the flu than the general population, especially H1N1, which I'm sure will be included in the regular flu vaccine this year.

Additionally, if your baby will be born during flu season, it will have ZERO protection from the flu since it can't get a flu shot until 6 months. It's only protection will come from you via breastfeeding, or it will also receive some of the protection from the flu shot if you get it.

I don't get flu shots and am not planning on getting one now either. It's a personal choice I think. Educate yorself and make the informed decision that is right for you but don't let someone else talk you in to or out of one.

I'm exposed to germs daily as I work at an urgent care. I plan on getting the vaccine and so will my kids. Being pregnant lowers your immune system so you are potentially more susceptible to getting sick. Also, once you are sick your body has a tougher time fighting it.

I got the flu shot yesterday. They gave me the shot, not the mist (mist is live virus, shot isn't), and I got a preservative free version. It's required for my job, though there are many people in my workplace who don't get the shot because it's not required for them -- and last year, a lot of those people got the flu!!!! I don't want to be around sick people during my pregnancy, but feel much better if I've had the flu shot.

Like everyone else, I say it's extremely important.. Especially during pregnancy. I talked to my doctor about it today! The "stuff" you don't like putting in your body is simply a killed flu virus to prevent you from contracting it. Better safe than sorry, especially this year!!

The flu is terribly dangerous in general but even more so for infants, the elderly and pregnant women.

The contents of a flu shot will not give you meningitis. That's like saying you don't want to get a flu shot because your friend when to the doctor's office to get her and then got hit by a bus as she was leaving.

I never said i didn't want to get it because a friend got sick after getting it. I'm taken by the fact that she got hers and immediately got meningitis. It's just a huge coincidence. The flu is a virus. Meningitis is a bacterial infection. They have absolutely nothing to do with one another. Your friend may have contracted meningitis because pregnant women have slightly reduced immune systems during pregnancy -- which is another good reason why pregnant women should get the flu shot.

Ok so I know that the flu shot doesn't make you sick with the flu but PERSONALLY every time I got it in the past the few days following were hell for me so sick, throwing up, fever and I don't know why. Could it just be an allergic reaction that I get to the flu shots? I want to do everything to protect me and my baby and getting the flu shot is something I think I should do. Any thoughts on why I always get sick? Like I said I know it's the flu from the shot and I'm not trying to discourage anyone from getting it I'm just confused!!

That would be something to talk to your doctor about. The flu doesn't cause vomiting so it's definitely not the cause of you puking but I suppose an allergy could case that.

As a pharmacist, I am heavily pro-vaccination. For myself and anyone else. I my mind, there's no reason not to get vaccinated unless you're allergic to the vaccine or its components.

I 100% agree with you and i would have liked some good feed back as well...how ever it sounds like people are more interested in judging and calling people stupid or just telling htem their opinions are wrong...so we may be on our own with this topic. I am against vaccinations i dont really like the idea of injecting things into my body but i also want to protect myself and my baby. i have been doing a lot of research on this because most people just tryin to scare you into doing it. Let me know if you come up with good research. Right now i am leaning more towards doing it just because of the baby but i have not decided completely yet.

Go back and re-read the responses. Ladies quoted the CDC and New England Journal of Medicine, who unequivocally say pregnant women should get the flu vaccine. That's pretty damn "good feedback" and "good research".

FFS. A lot of good and helpful information was given in this thread. The only person that got somewhat called out was someone who misrepresented some information.

And honestly, I'm not sure I ever want to know why you are completely against vaccinations.

@blibby0713 - Your doc is pushing it because it will protect you and your unborn baby. It will also provide some immunity for the baby after it is born.

@luvU2themoon - Research all you want but please go to credible sites with peer reviewed material.

If you are looking for research to help you make an informed decision I can assure you that your doctor (or the health department or an infectious disease doctor) is a much better source than the University of Google. All of the above will highly recommend you receive the flu vaccine. People tend to want every issue to have two debatable sides. This one does not. Science has repeatedly proven that the benefit of vaccines heavily outweighs any risk (unless you are allergic to some component). Any research you find to the contrary is not backed by science. Get your flu vaccine.

I agree that the University of Google is not the best way to make a decision about flu vaccines. However, please keep in mind that some take a more holistic, non-Western approach to health care and these methods generally encourage you to think twice before getting a flu vaccine "because the doctor says so."

Maybe do a little research outside of what the news tells u would open ur minds. I will never post on here again. I want to enjoy my pregnancy and not get rapped up in all this drama.

I've seen kids suffer and die unnecessarily due to their parents' "holistic" or "natural" stance on medicine. That's all the evidence I need to vaccinate.

So because your doctor says you should have it, that's defined as "clearly needed?" Wouldn't someone with known issues with the flu season and/or typically bad immune system from the start be considered clearly needed? I'm willing to bet 9 out of 10 people in here do not change their brake pads every time they go in for an oil change, even though the experts 'recommend' it.

The 0.5-mL prefilled syringe presentation is formulated without preservative.

However, thimerosal, a mercury derivative used during manufacturing, is removed by

subsequent purification steps to a trace amount (≤ 1 mcg mercury per 0.5-mL dose).

The 5-mL multidose vial formulation contains thimerosal, a mercury derivative,

added as a preservative. Each 0.5-mL dose from the multidose vial contains 25 mcg

mercury.

So doing the math on the multi dose vial, that equals to 2.5 mcg of thimerosal/dose. So it is correct to think that if you were to have this brand name administered you are better off to opt for the pre-filled dose which contains 250% less.

The route if my husband and I will take, should we choose that we want to do this, is to get the "Flublok" variation. The flublok contains 0% thimerosal (mercury) and is not derived from chicken DNA. Packet here:

Anyone have thoughts on waiting til you're in the second trimester?

I didn't get the flu shot with either of my previous pregnancies but do plan to IF I get pregnant again & if possible, it was my thought to wait til I was 12-13 weeks... Not that I think the virus causes mc, but that by that time the baby has had a decent amount of growth & for some reason that makes me feel like its better,,,? I don't know, just a question. Tia!

It is a public message board, a lot of people come to first tri to help out the new Mamas. There are a few boards you want to stay away from out of respect for "sensitive situations" like the loss board, the infertility boards and so on if you don't belong on them. I specifically said "Idk if the flu shot had anything to do with that" . That is NOT implying that the flu shot HAD anything to do with that.

This thread makes me cringe. OP- I'm an executive in a hospital. We require all personnel to get the flu shot. Period. I don't believe for a second you have a choice in the matter if you work in healthcare.

Also, the flu can be deadly for you and your unborn baby. Go get it, FFS!! Anyone who is "against vaccines" is an idiot.
