Gender has always referred to the Sex of a baby. Recently people have gotten it confused due to research on gender identity and gender role, these are the terms we should be using if we are going to correct someone. Only recently has gender become the short of these terms. From a very early time gender simply refers to the sex of a person, so everyone is right.

Drives me crazy when people correct others because of the huge hype of everything going on now. Go back some years from now an there wouldn't be all the remarks of "you're not finding out the gender of your baby you're finding out the sex." Everyone knows what someone means when they say they want to know the gender, people have just become where they have to correct every little thing about what others say. Causing drama and arguments that are in no way needed or wanted.

Gender has never referred to biological sex. Gender is a social construct. Webster: the behavioral, cultural, or psychological traits typically associated with one sex. You cannot know or pre-determine the gender of a fetus.

That being said, I don't know why people waste their time correcting people.

I personally don't care how people say it, but the World Health Organization says the following, which says that sex is the proper term to use:

Sometimes it is hard to understand exactly what is meant by the term "gender", and how it differs from the closely related term "sex".

"Sex" refers to the biological and physiological characteristics that define men and women.

"Gender" refers to the socially constructed roles, behaviours, activities, and attributes that a given society considers appropriate for men and women.

To put it another way:

"Male" and "female" are sex categories, while "masculine" and "feminine" are gender categories.

Aspects of sex will not vary substantially between different human societies, while aspects of gender may vary greatly.

I agree that gender is different from sex but everybody knows people are talking about sex when they talk about the gender of an unborn baby since they don't really have a gender yet. Unfortunately "sex" is a homonym which makes it sound funny in certain contexts when talking about babies. (ie. Baby's Sex reveal vs Baby's Gender Reveal). For this reason, some people, including me, just use the word gender just because it sounds better. Not a big deal IMO. Nobody is trying to be unPC, hurtful, or insensitive.....there are way bigger things to worry about!!

It is not a small deal for people who happen to be transgendered. I just don't see what is so difficult about using the correct terms, it's not "PC" it's just the polite and accurate thing to do.

This lady replied ::: "You won't know the gender of your baby for a really long time. If you want to find out the sex, however, there are blood tests that will do that."

It's called having morals, and sticking to what you believe in. I have a spine and I'm not going to appease other people by changing how I feel. That being said, this is America and you have a right to believe whatever you want. But I think it's pretty hypocritical to fight for the acceptance of everyone AS LONG AS they agree with you or believe what you do.

I support people who are transgender, I believe people can be born with the wrong gender. However, if my baby is born with girl parts I will probably consider her a girl until she expresses otherwise. Same with if it has boy parts. That's how things typically work in America. So yeah, I feel ok using gender and sex interchangeably for a fetus/infant. I do not for, say, a school aged child.

I stand behind that last paragraph too-seems that we're a minority but that's ok.

That being said, I grew up with many days playing with boy toys and sports but I had my "dolly" days too. But I'm still a girl.

The dictionary uses both definitions for gender, sex and the behavioral thing. I do not care either way. I use the term gender as sex, however I have nothing against individuals who are or will be transgender if my child is than I will not love her or him any less. Im a girl and do not get offended when people cal me dude or man because I know its not meant to imply that I have man parts.
