Babies: 0 - 3 Months

cereal in bottle...

A friend of mine is a pediatrician and she also has a 3 month old baby.  I was telling her that DS has been waking up every hour this week and she said her DS was doing that too and she has been putting cereal in his bedtime bottle...I know it is not suggested but I am going to try it and see if it works?!

Does anyone else do this? If so, how much cereal do you add to the bottle?

Re: cereal in bottle...

  • It's a choking hazard and all the reliable research out there says it doesn't work and is dangerous, so I'm not really sure what you'll gain by trying it.  Your pediatrician friend should know better. . .

  • The recommended amount is 1 tablespoon of cereal for 2 ounces of milk/formula.  As for the not being recommended, I had never heard about about it until someone pointed it out here a couple of days ago.

I give him cereal in a bottle every now and then (not every day) and while during the day it takes him to at least 4 or 5 hours, I haven't noticed a difference at night.

  • If you look right on the Rice Cereal product information on Gerber's website, they recommend against putting cereal in a bottle because it can cause choking.  If your baby has GERD, that is a different issue- the benefit may outweigh the risk.  Otherwise, babies simply sleep longer when they are ready.

  • We have tried this, and I just didn't see where it worked at all. Do you swaddle him?
  • Something scares me about this statement:
