Hit in the Stomach

So, yesterday my husband, 12 year old daughter, and I were throwing around a Nerf football.  My husband threw to me, I missed the catch, and wham!  Right into the lower left side of my abdomen.  It wasn't a terribly hard hit, but it did make a loud 'thump' sound and we all just kind of froze for a minute.  It hurt a little, but not too bad.  Of course, I was worried all evening and even woke up at 5am worrying about it.  My husband thinks it's totally fine and has told me to calm down, that there's lots of fluid and cushion around the baby.  I try to remind myself that that there are pregnant moms of toddlers who probably get accidentally kicked/poked in the stomach all the time and it's fine, but I'm just really upset with myself for letting something so silly like that happen.  I'm 13 weeks along and I didn't have any side effects after the football incident, but I do think I'll the doctor tomorrow just to feel better.

My question is: Have any of you accidentally hit your belly during this pregnancy or a prior pregnancy?  Was everything okay?

Re: Hit in the Stomach

  • My friends toddler swan dived on me at 8 weeks and all is well, but yeah the panic happened and we had the "mommys friend has a baby inside of her" convo

  • My toddler regularly climbs me and jumps on me. I deflect it as much as I can, but all 22lbs of her have landed hard on my stomach many times. I think you should be fine, but call if it'll help ease your mind :)

  • Thank you all so much for your responses!  I knew I was probably being paranoid, and now it has been confirmed :)  In all seriousness, thank you for the reassurance and I hope you all have wonderful and healthy pregnancies!!

  • My two year old climbs on me and kicks and elbows me repeatedly in the process. Have been trying to keep him off, but i have taken quite a few hits and jabs. So far, so good. If you're worried about it, a call to your doc couldn't hurt, but your husband is right - there is a lot of fluid and stuff protecting the baby.

  • I'm 12 weeks and I got kneed in the stomach fairly hard by a patient at the hospital on Thursday night...I worried a little but haven't had any problems and have been fine! The baby is still pretty low in your belly and there's lots of cushion...I know it's hard for us not to worry but I think your ok

My 17lb cat climbs on me all the time while I'm sitting or laying down. DH gets a little concerned (especially the other night when he woke up to see kitty sleeping ON me and felt the need to make sure he wasn't sleeping on my stomach), but other than being a little uncomfortable and usually making me have to pee, it's no big deal. I'm sure a nerf football didn't do any damage either.

  • I work with kids who are emotionally disturbed and had one student kick me in the stomach at 13 weeks. I worried about it but since I had no cramping or bleeding I didn't want to worry too much. But it's still scary.
  • My 42lb 4.5 year old climbs and jumps on my all the time. Now he knows there is a baby in there he is doing better but it was hard for him to understand why he couldn't do it anymore.

  • I fell in the bathtub on my stomach on 20 weeks it freaked DH and I out so much we went to ER, but baby was fine and I learned of my skeletal issue of SBP which caused my hip to go out in the shower. It was extremely scary. They monitored me for a couple hours but baby was fine. I am sure a nerf hit isn't as bad... but if it makes you worried I would call your OB or Midwife.

  • I wrestled a 250 pound patient into restraints last week and got all kinds of knocked around. Went to OB for an ultrasound and everything was all good.
