MFP ladies

I just joined and made my profile but I'm wondering what I should adjust my calories to since I'm BFing/pumping. Anyone have any idea? I know it varies by person, but I have no idea what to put in.

ETA: feel free to add me ladies, I'm boring so my username is the same (wishtonight)

Re: MFP ladies

  • I believe that breastfeeding burns 300-500 calories per day. I might start with assuming 400 and adjust based on what you observe in your weight loss. If you are losing more than 2 lb per week, you probably need to eat more. If you don't lose, then maybe adjust down. I would also follow your own hunger cues to some extent. If you only add 300 calories to what MFP says and you are still super hungry but you are eating plenty of protein and fruits and veggies, you probably need to eat more. gL!

  • I've heard add 500 calories, focusing on protein.

  • I add 500-600 calories. I'm still losing 1-2 lbs per week (sometimes more). My son is huge, so I assume he's eating a lot lol!

  • Add me as a friend, my screen name is: Arnegard.
A friend told me you can add nursing under exercise and it gives 200 extra calories.  She also has her settings at 1/2 lb a week and loses more than that with nursing.

I forgot that this is what I did too and it worked well!
  • I add exclusively breastfeeding under my food, not under exercise. Same idea though. I found a way (I forget how I found it) to even say how many oz he's eating per day. I estimated 30, now that he's having some solids I'm saying 28. I'm going by the fact that my oldest (nursing didn't work, so I pumped and supplemented then went to formula) always ate 32 oz a day. He's bigger than she is so I suspect he may take more. Back when he took a bottle he once ate 15 oz in a 3 hour period at my ILs and did not spit a drop of it up. And nursed as soon as I returned.

I could totally have this wrong.  I am not BF, so I'd trust you over me.

Ah, okay! The rule of them I've heard is it takes 25 calories to produce each oz of breastmilk, so you estimate how much your baby eats (or if you EP or pump during the day for work you'll have a better idea of how much) and add in 25 calories per oz.

Also, be careful with too much dieting before your supply is established as it can impact your supply. I tried dieting when Drew was little and he got fussy for a few days. I stopped and he was happy again, so I'm pretty sure I was going too hard core too early. Now I'm having no trouble satisfying him and have been dieting since mid-July and have lost 13 lbs so far. I'm being really careful not to undereat and to get a ton of fruits and veggies throughout the day to make sure we both get enough nutrition.
