3rd Trimester

Wine during 3rd tri

I am 34 weeks and have been enjoying a glass of wine or so each week during my third trimester. Generally red wine for some reason. It feels good to add this bit back into my life as I move towards the birth of my first baby! Anyone else been partaking in light wine drinking? How much do you allow yourself?
Three cheers to all the wine loving 1st,2nd,&3rd tri ladies :)

Re: Wine during 3rd tri

  • I have occasionally drunk some wine (mostly to stop false labor contractions actually!). I'm sure it's fine to have a few glasses a month, but I've just been so tired and sick throughout the pregnancy I haven't felt like drinking even the smallest amount!

  • I have abstained completely. While logically I'm sure one glass won't hurt, I would feel too guilty to enjoy it. I'll look forward to a glass or 5 st the end of November, lol!
  • I didn't drink in the 1st or 2nd trimesters but have had some wine in the 3rd. I have had a glass about 2x a month the past couple months. I usually have a glass of white wine when I do have any. My doctor advised differently. I am due Thursday so I am almost there.

Not so much. DH tries to get me to sip his beer. Sometimes I cave to peer pressure. We definitely both make decisions together in what I eat/drink. He doesn't ever make me feel guilty. Most times he's the one bringing me the italian sub.. ;)

At this point though, since I'm very far along, I just figured I'll wait it out the final few weeks.

  • I have sips of DH's glasses throughout the week, so probably 1/2 -1 glass per week.

  • Me!  And I love it.  I've had a glass here and there with dinner... about 2-3 times per week.  Never more than 1 glass per time, which my doctor said is just fine.  Cheers!
  • I am occasionally partaking in a little glass (like 4 oz) of red wine with dinner. I try to reserve those occasions for days when I have been having BH from hell. Yesterday was one of those days.

  • Over the past few weeks I've had a small glass of wine a few times. It's relaxing and tastes so good!
  • I'm waiting. December isn't that far away.

  • I've had a few glasses of red wine and champagne . Usually it's just a small glass and always just one.

  • During all of my pregnancies the smell of alcohol was a very strong aversion. I don't have anything against light wine drinking (wine mostly because my MW recommended 3-4 oz of red wine). I just couldn't get within 3 feet of an open alcohol container of any kind while pregnant. It was the only thing that made me dry heave the entire time.

  • I heard that you could have a glass but I never got around to asking my OB so I have abstained. I've been without any alcohol for so long now that I figure I can make it 7 more weeks. Since I can't BF (physically, I cannot because I had a massive breast reduction with a free nipple graft) I will never have to pump and dump when I can resume having drinks.

I actually want/need to have a reduction. I was worried to do it for BF reasons. When the doc does the reduction it renders you unable to BF? Feel free to PM if you would rather not go into it in this thread.

  • For whatever reason, I have a huge aversion to the smell of alcohol - even wine. So while I'm sure light drinking is fine, I just haven't  and won't. I don't know if I'll still have the same food/drink aversions while breastfeeding so we'll see what happens.
  • I've thought about it, but I just can't bring my self to have a glass.  I know European studies show that anything short of alcoholism is not likely to cause harm, but I, too, can't shake the guilt enough to enjoy a glass.  Perhaps, however, I won't wait so long to enjoy a glass after this baby.  We'll see.

  • My OB told me I was perfectly fine having the occasional glass throughout my pregnancy. I followed all of the other rules...lunch meat, sushi, hot dogs, etc. but enjoyed an occasional glass of wine. I had three miscarriages prior to having my DD. I didn't feel like I was putting myself or her in any danger by doing so.
  • I would feel too guilty drinking wine during pregnancy. I just can't bring myself to do it studies or no studies. I'd rather be safe then sorry in any case so I have been following all rules abt what you can / can't eat and drink during pregnancy and have 0 regrets. With next one I'll do the same. 9 months is not that long to exclude certain pleasures from your diet to give LO better chances and better nutrition
  • I haven't only because this is my first baby and I'm overly cautious. I'm sure 1 glass of wine is fine a week though. My family's from Europe, and all of the people who were pregnant in my family enjoyed a glass of wine during their pregnancy, and their kids turned out just fine. I only have 3 weeks left until my due date, so I'm just going to enjoy nonalcoholic drinks until I give birth, and even then I will have to limit my alcohol intake due to nursing.
  • I've had maybe two glasses my entire pregnancy to date. One in my first trimester and one in the second, both with a meal. I don't miss it to horribly but I am looking forward to a nice, cold glass of white with Christmas dinner.
  • I drink a glass or 2 per week. I've been enjoying being able to partake a little =) My SIL had a small party last weekend and I drank cranberry juice with a splash of red wine. It looks like red wine, tasted at least marginally like red wine, and I could drink multiple of these (each had probably less than a quarter glass of wine). Made me feel more like a part of the group to be able to walk around with my wine glass.

I wish I could have some wine, but I know I wouldn't be able to have just one glass, so I'm abstaining. Only 3 more weeks for me. I'm mostly looking forward to pumpkin beer.
Oh!  Pumpkin Ale season!  I must remember to buy a 6 pack and put it away.  Thanks for the reminder!
Since I haven't visited the liquor store in quite some time, I told DH to buy me a couple of 6 packs. I also told all my family that whoever sneaks a pumpkin beer into the hospital for me after the baby is born will receive my everlasting love.

  • May be a stupid question, but what about wine coolers? I hate the taste of wine, but like the wine coolers because they are sweet. Wonder if this is Ok occasionally.
  • None I would not feel
Comfortable drinking alcohol while pregnant . It's only 9 months.

Straight wine is better for you, as it has less sugar and more antioxidants. But most wine coolers have real wine in them, so you still get some antioxidants.
Regardless, a little bit of alcohol won't hurt you.

  • Too much heartburn for wine! It might actually kill me.
  • I have not but only because I don't seem to like it while I'm pregnant. I however still like beer and take sips of SO's every once in a while.

  • I could sooooooooo use a glass now but I am afraid I would get too buzzed and the heartburn might kill me too.  I'll just wait till after my little girl is born to enjoy my very large glass of wine :)
  • I had 1/2 of a glass of sangria at home a few weeks ago. My husband was side-eying me the whole time. Other than that, I haven't had any. I've been too afraid to order any while out at a restaurant, for fear the waiter may say something and put me on the spot.
  • Much like a few of you on here, I just can't bring myself to consider having a glass of wine.  I would feel way too guilty although I know many women do have wine and it is all good!  I had nightmares about me drinking alcohol during my first trimester.  It was horrible! haha 12 weeks left for me-  I can wait ;)
  • Nope, I wouldn't even chance it even though everything would probably be fine. There's no way I could anyways, alcohol made me want to puke. I'm 2 weeks pp and I still can't even think about drinking.

I would, except my heartburn is killing me and I fear red wine would make it so horrible it wouldn't be worth it :( I have had "non alcoholic" ginger "wine" at 1%, and the white or red (before the horrid heartburn) at .5%. I sip on H's beer is he has a yummy one (Sam Adams Oktoberfest anyone?) And had him get me some shock top honeycrisp apple, it's delish!! Even though I looove wine, I've been craving beer, cider and the like way more than wine.

I hate, hate, hate beer, but I've been craving some cider! My DH bought me a pack of Angry Orchard that we are sharing. I drink maybe a quarter of a bottle every few days.

  • I've had a beer here and there...talking low alcohol, like coors light.  I think I've had a total of 4 the entire pregnancy and the first one was late in the 2nd Tri and all on special occasions (formal ball for work in NYC, a friends 30th birthday, our anniversary etc.).  I may have a weak mimosa at my shower this weekend.  As long as you aren't having more than 1 in a sitting or more than 1 a week all will be fine.

Aren't those dreams strange? I've had dreams of drinking heavy alcohol (like whiskey or tequila) and even smoking pot. And in my dream I know I'm pregnant and I think "Oh crap what am I doing?" and then I wake up and it takes a minute for me to shake that guilty feeling.

  • I can't drink alcohol due to a med I have to take for a complication. I'm gonna tear up some bottles of Pinot Grigio come Christmas though!

  • Personally, I've abstained; I'm the type that worries about everything, so why throw this into the mix? I also plan to abstain while BF... it will just make life easier.  I do, however, miss touring/visiting wineries with my hubby.  But it gives us something to look forward to- and a great date idea ;-)
  • I absolutely love wine, but haven't had a glass since I found out I was pregnant. I am 33 weeks and just finding out I had gestational diabetes, so I will be waiting until the end of November as well.
