  • OMG I love this thread.

I'm all about the shining and Nightmare on Elm Street! Ahhh there aren't many classic type scary movies I'm not fond of.  The Exorcist, Insidious, Halloween.

You have totally inspired a movie night in my home :)

Boo, didn't you read my FFFC? :P

DH loves the Scream movies, but I can only watch them in the daytime. My imagination can really get me worked up - I'm terrible at watching scary things.

I'm the same way! I miss out on a lot of "movie nights" with friends because they all LOVE scary movies and I'm too much of a chicken to watch them :(

I remember as a kid, catching a few minutes of Chuckie on tv, and to this day, I still am freaked out by him...

  • My FAVOURITE scary movie is probably Scream, but the movie that still scares me to even think about today is Candyman!!!

  • I hate watching scary movies. It makes my anxiety go through the roof. So my experience is limited to pre-adulthood. I used to watch the Nightmare on Elm Street ones, the Hellraiser series, Poltergeist. I also remember one called the Candyman I think. I had a friend in 8th grade who loved these type of horror flicks, so I watched them with her. I can't say that I have a favorite, though, haha.

OH man I almost forgot- Paranormal Activity. I literally SCREAMED at one point in that movie.

The only movie that ever gave me creeps when laying in bed as a grown up.

And Candyman ---- That was my childhood nightmare starter lol! That and pinhead or hellraiser or whatever.

Candyman is truly frightening!!! Tony Todd (the Candyman) is in other movies/shows and I can't even attempt to watch them bc he scares me so much!! I just mentioned this movie in the post before yours! :)

  • The scariest movies I watch are shark movies ;) (Like Shark Night 3d, Jaws, Deep Blue Sea)

I do like the Shining, but all other ghost movies terrify me.  I used to LOVE them but I had a turning point around 20 years old that made me all anxious when I watch them.

I just can't watch those movies anymore. I find some so stupid at the end that I get annoyed. I always feel like the scariest movies are the ones that could really happen...like that new movie Prisoners about girls getting abducted. I also was super freaked out watching the movie Vacancy because I just kept thinking there was no where to go or way to leave. I also couldn't watch American Horror Story on tv, I wanted to, thought the story line might be cool, but just couldn't do it. I loved the movies Scream and The Craft when I was younger though, lol. I think one of my all time fav movies, more thriller than horror or scary, is Kiss The Girls...I still watch it when it's on tv!

ETA: my dd's birthday is on a 13th, so some day her birthday will fall on a Friday the 13th, lol.

  • I love scary movies! Even though I do absolutely get myself so freaked out that I can't sleep sometimes, I can't help watch them.

I remember watching The Grudge in our dorm with 4 other girls. We all screamed and an RA came running, all freaked out because he didn't know what was going on.

The Shining, It, Halloween, The Exorcist ... love all of them!

  • I only like the original horror films on my following list.  I HATE the remakes of any horror movie.

    1. Friday the 13th

    2. Texas Chainsaw Masacre

    3. When a Stranger Calls

    4. Halloween

  • The Shining is one of my favorite movies of all time. DH bought me the DVD this past Valentine's Day....romantic huh? ;)

Oh and we stayed at The Stanley Motel in Estes Park, CO which is where Stephen King stayed when he was inspired to write the book. It was awesome.

Weird, I used to work at The Algonquin Hotel in new Brunswick and they say the same thing about that place.  I've never read the book or seen the movie but the staff there could draw all kinds of parallels to the grounds.

That is weird! I wonder if he stayed at a few different creepy hotels or maybe a few of them just found an easy way to attract tourists.

  • I can't watch scary movies my anxiety kicks into high gear and then turns into irrational fear I know I'm crazy. The scariest most haunting movies for me are the ones about possessions. They scare the life out of me.

My guess is that at The Algonquin it became a rumor that just got passed around.  He apparently used to come and rent a room at the hotel and write there... but he never did it the summer I worked there so I can not verify the hotel gossip.

  • I love the Saw movies!!  DH and I have seen all but one on opening day at the theater!  I don't know why I like them, they gross me out.  I think if one was being released this fall, I couldn't go see it!  This pregnancy has made my stomach extra weak...I couldn't even stand the site of dog poop on my niece's foot the other night!  Or maybe it was the fact that my Grandma swiped it off so she could sniff it and see what it was!  YUCK!

  • I LOVED scary movies as a kid, now they freak me out a little more.  I apparently watched to many as a kid because I will NEVER put my handi nt he garbage disposal if soemthing falls in it.

I loved Nightmare on Elm St, but I think Pet Cemetary was one that freaked me out the most.

  • I was crazy about scary movies! They didn't even scare me. Until my son arrived... I now get frequented with nightmares at the slightest thing. I can't watch the news because anything about rape, child molesters, etc drives my dreams into overtime.

Before him though... *sigh* that's all I watched. I don't have a favorite. They're all my favorite... Or we're.

Ill just stick to Halloween themed movies now.

I love this movie - I watch it every Halloween! Despite the scary parts (I'm probably the biggest wuss ever I am scared to go pee at night in the dark!) I love the little town they live in it seems so nice.

I've been scared of lots of movies like the Ring, Shutter Island, but not the old classics usually, I just love old movies too much to get scared of those ones. I do get scared by anything involving crazy people though... my DH has made me cry really easily by bringing scary stuff up. He's a patient man, whenever I have to walk through the house alone or sometimes even go pee I scare myself and make him talk to me so I know he's there.

  • I do NOT like scary movies!  Not even a little bit.

I like thrillers, and suspense but not blood, guts and gore.  The furthest I go are the M Night Shyamalan movies.....
  • I LOVE scary movies!! DH and SIL won't watch them so I go on Scary Movie Dates with BIL lol :)

Favorite scary movies: Halloween, Friday the 13th, Hostel

I also like cheesy 80s scary movies (for those who who haven't seen Killer Klowns from Outer Space, you're missing out on a masterpiece!)

  • I am a huuuuuuge fan of scary movies...unfortunately my SO is not. He's a huge baby and will continuously talk throughout so that he won't be too scared. I don't know what my favorite is, but The Decent is the last movie that genuinely freaked me out. No matter how many times I watch it I still jump.

  • It's so weird, I could probably watch the movies without a problem if they were on mute.  It's the sound that I really can't stand!

I think you are correct that he used to stay there (fairmont algonquin) now and then. I think he did some writing there but I think the CO hotel was the actual shining inspiration. However, I know the algonquin is said to be quite haunted.
Yup... i'm not exactly a believer and I had some freaky-assed experiences there.
