Witching Hour

My other post got me to thinking...when is witching hour in your house and how do you handle it?

Here it is about 6 (welcome home from work Daddy!) until about 8 when we are winding her down and getting her ready for bed.

Weather permitting we take her out for a walk. This is also the time I pass her to DH and take a hot shower and crack open a beer. I learned some infant massage techniques so I've started doing that. Her white noise machine and paci are also well-utilized during this time period. Luckily by the time she finishes her "before bed" bottle she is calm and ready for bed.

Re: Witching Hour

  • We had a really bad couple of nights when we first got home from the hospital, she screamed from 8:30 to 12. Right now she is going through the three week growth spurt so it's more like witching days.... if she's not feeding, she's not happy, I am pretty much being sucked dry at this point.

  • Ours is 8-10. I've found that playing music loudly calms down her freak out. I tell myself it distracts her from her cry lol

  • Ours is generally from around 6:30-7 to 8:30-9? It's after I pick up dh from the train and we get home until bedtime.

  • 7-10 . Screaming non stop. Goodbye free time, hello insanity.

  • Uhm..about noon to 10-10:30. Only because that's when she finally goes to sleep for the night. *sigh*

  • Our is 7-9pm until he eats and goes down. The only thing we have found that helps is if LO is "jumping." We hold him and just keep lifting him up/down as if he were jumping. When that stops working, nothing else we've tried helps except for a bath so I look forward to bath days because witching hour is 10-15 minutes shorter.

  • Ours is 5:30/6 until bed time which is usually between 9 & 10.

  • Ours is 6-8pm and involves lots of screaming and cluster feeds. I can usually get her settled and to sleep around 8 and then she nurses and we go to bed around 9pm.
  • 7-12. If LO could move that up by two hours that would be great, because I go back to work next week

  • LO usually has 2 witching hours a day. The first is around 4pm, the second around 8pm. I usually put him in the Moby wrap and go outside with the other kids in the afternoon. 8:00 is crazy, everyone's bedtime and everyone wants mommy. LO either ends up in the Moby again or Daddy walks him around.

If you haven't tried wearing your baby with a snug wrap, I highly encourage it. I had a Bjorne with my first and it didn't work like the Moby or Ring Sling, both have worked magic with my last two kiddos.
  • Ours is from 8-10 and then he goes down to sleep for a good stretch. Daddy is always home in time for it.

  • 4 or 6 am until about noon. It's pretty rough. The lactation consultant said she's got it flipped as most babies go through theirs at night.

  • We also have been blessed with 2 witching hours 10am to noon and 6pm to 9.

I usually deal in the morning with a long car ride. I get Starbucks and dd sleeps a bit.

In the evening, DH is home so it's tag team patenting. She is swaddled, walked around, vacuum on, etc. I take a shower or rest. We eat dinner one at a time.

  • Ours is 6-8. I try to make her nap right before super long so she is super hungry and I am super full when she wakes up from it and I can kind of halfway nurse her through it. If I can't settle her, I just give her a bath. Gives her enough to think about to buy me some silence.

  • witching hour?? Do your lo's cry the entire time? Act fussy? I don't know if my son has one.

  • My boy is 6 weeks old and he's a little fussy in the late afternoon (around 4pm), but I just stick him on my boob. Even if he's not really hungry, it works for us. It never lasts too long though, knock on wood.
  • Mine is anywhere from 7pm-11pm usually. But today it was between 2 and 6pm. She is calm now. Long enough for me to eat dinner and enjoy a beer.

Witching hour is typically the fussiest time of day. It looks different for most babies and children. At my house, the time between dinner and bedtime routine can be ugly- lots of tantrum and tears. Typically for my LO, he just wants to bed held and put to sleep.

  • Our fussy period is around 7 until 9. She is either on the boob or in the carrier during that time because if she's not being held she acts upset and getting her to sleep for those two hours proves difficult.
  • 11pm-3am.  Give or take a half hour. Fun times.

  • Ours is 6pm (goodbye dinnertime!) until about 8/830pm. Lots of fussing. Going outside makes him happy, as does a bath. Unfortunately he only wants mommy at that time.
  • He's the fussiest around 3:30-5:30am. I miss sleep.

  • Ours is btw 7pm-9pm. There's really nothing wrong. She just wants to be held. We try to start the bedtime routine at 9 to help end the witching hour session.

I don't feel that my LO has one either. If she's fussy it's because she's either hungry or needs to be changed. There's no extended period of fussiness here!

  • Oh goodness ours is anywhere from 8 pm to whenever we can get him to sleep (usually 11ish if we are Lucky). We do everything from white noise to swaddling to constant feeding and rocking but the thing that REALLY works is running the vacuum! If it is the middle of the night and we don't want to go find the vacuum we just make a loud vacuum-like noise. I know it sounds stupid but it works!

This is why the vacuum has been permanently relocated to our bedroom.

Even though I ebf, I need caffeine some days. Fortunately, it doesn't seen to impact dd much. She's a great sleeper.

  • Ours is 9-11pm when all of his needs are met and he still is fussy the only thing that helps is walking around with him "perched" looking over the shoulder until he is ready to sleep, luckily when he's ready to sleep we get 4-5 hour stretch yay!
