Hypothyroidism and Pregnancy

Do any non-first time moms have hypothyroidism? I have it and I'm not sure how they will handle it during pregnancy. They re-tested me and my TSH has dropped quite a bit in a 3 week timeframe so they increased my Synthroid dosage just a bit. I'm wondering how often it will be monitored. Any experience with this?

Re: Hypothyroidism and Pregnancy

  • I have Hashimotos Hypothyroid.  They don't too much differently.  They will up your dosage a bit and test you more often.  I think I got tested every time I went in.  so like every six weeksish.

  • This is a good question.  I technically have hypothyroidism but my levels are off so little I normally wouldn't be treated.  I was only put on meds because we were TTC and I was told that would make it easier, guess it worked.  I haven't asked if my meds will need to change though, guess I will find out soon.

  • My experience was that they upped my dosage from 125 mg to 175 mg. That's what my body needed. My endo said if I got pregnant again (which I am now), he would go to 175 immediately and adjust from there. Just means more bloodwork more often!

  • I have hashis as well. Mine is tested about every 4 weeks at first. If stable then I move to 6 weeks. I usually just call the office when I notice its off and do a draw.

  • Hmmmm I was diagnosed with hashimoto disease last month before I was pregnant and he said if I get pregnant to call and get tested right away. I did take a test the day I found out and my levels were normal. So my dosage didn't change. He said he would see me in November.
  • I've had it since I was 13 years old.  When I was pregnant with DD I knew they would have to monitor my levels so I called the Dr. as soon as I got a BFP.  My dosage pre-pregnancy was 112.5 and it increased to 125 in the second tri and then to 150 in the third tri.  Right after delivering I went back down to 112.5.  However, my levels have been constant since being diagnosed 16 years ago.

  • Jen, do you do anything special with your diet? I've read a gluten free diet is helpful for some with hypothyroidism
  • My endo wanted bloodwork as soon as I found out I was pregnant...he upper my meds from 100 mfg to 150mcg. Just extra blood work and monitoring.
