Opinion on Girl's Name

I've had this name in the back of my head for years.  However, now that there's a possibility of me actually using it, I'm on the fence.  I love it, but I am nervous about it being a little "out there."  So, I'm asking your opinions.  I'm not going to base my decision totally off of the views of strangers, but I'm interested in hearing what others think.  The name is Rune.  :)

Re: Opinion on Girl's Name

  • I like it. :)

I wouldn't use it with our last name, but if it works with yours I say go for it.

  • Not sure. I'm not a fan of "made-up" names. Is it from something or an actual name that's just rare? Otherwise, I think I like it since it's short and pronounceable. (pronounced "roon," right?) But like PP said, I can already see kids on the playground calling her "runey-pruney..."

  • Haha, in the almost 15 years since I've had the name in mind, I've never once thought of prune.  Bullies will be bullies, I guess.

It's not a made-up name, it's German/Swedish and considered unisex, but admittedly more of a boy's name.  It is pronounced like "roon."

I feel like there are so many unique and different names these days that making fun of something like this is just silly.
  • I'm from Western NY & we pronounce "ruin" as "roon" - I get made fun of outside my area for saying it that way, but just something to think about.

As an aside, I love the name Ruby & wanted a more "formal" version of it so I started floating Rubelle in my head & LOVED it.  My husband told me he's not name his child after a rubella rash (German measles).  So that went out the window, haha.

  • I think of Gilmore Girls.. there is a character (I think someone's brother) named Rune and he was a jerk.  I do like the sound of the name but I agree with the Prune comments.  I wouldn't want my daughter to be an easier target for bullies due to her name.

  • I think of "The Mortal Instruments" book series. Runes are frequently used in those books and are technically old symbols or characters, I believe? Just my two cents.

  • In Gilmore girls there is a character named rune, and he gets a lot of heck the whole time about it. I'm not crazy about it plus I see it getting spelt wrong ruin, roone
  • not my style
  • Yes, kids will find a way to make fun of any name but Rune seems especially cruel to me.  Pruney-Runey?  Not a fan.

  • I like it.  I'm a Ruby, which is a wonderful, great, beautiful name (after my grandmother) and I got called Ruby-Booby.  Kids will make fun of kids no matter what.

You can get ahead of the Pruney-Runey curve and just steer her to swimming as an activity so she will actually be 'pruney' and it won't be cruel, it'll just be true. :)

  • I think of loon. loony roony. or pruney roony now that I have seen this thread. Not a bad name though and I agree, there are so many different names now that I don't think kids can make fun of anything.
  • I taught a boy who had a brother called Rune. He didn't get picked on for his name. I can't give an opinion on the name as I just think of that kid. But if you love it, use it!!!
  • I don't like it. I mean if I ever met someone named Rune, I wouldn't judge them but not something I would ever name a child.

  • Sorry, I don't like it.  It doesn't sound feminine to me.  It sounds too much like "ruin" to me.
  • Ive heard of it for a boy but lots of names now go both ways.

  • I like it!  Granted, you have to consider the pp, that bullies will be bullies - but that's almost all names.  I had a similar situation - I LOVED the name Soraya for years and years.  Then in the comments of some website, someone said "like psoriasis?"

    That was it.  Ruined.
  • I think it would make a better middle name. Then you have the ability to call her that if you want or if she likes, but you don't have to

  • NMS...first thing I thought when I saw it was "runs????, like the runs"
my next thought was "did she mean June?"

I'm not trying to make fun of it just trying to let you know what might go through peoples mind when the hear/ see it.

Some of the names on my list are "made up/not common"

  • You could do Runey - there's an actress Rooney Mara (if I spelled the correctly) so it's not totally out there....

  • Not a fan either. I couldn't imagine looking down at my child and calling him or her "Rune". Say it out loud a few times.
  • Rune the Racoon was the first thing that came to mind. NMS for sure.

  • I like Rune, but I like that it's such a historical sounding name.  I immediately think runes as in the ancient Runic alphabet.  I don't know.  I think it's pretty.  I don't think I would worry to much about the bullying aspect.  Plenty of kids with typical names get bullied or have their names picked apart.  Kids are just cruel and you're either the object of it or not.  I worked with kids for years, and I could give you a list of mean names that kids with very average names were called.  So, my vote is for it.
  • I think of The Office... isn't Dwight's weird cousin named Rune? Sorry...

    I think it's Mose?
You're right. I looked it up and it's actually Jackson's random cousin who goes out with Lorelai on Gilmore Girls. :)
  • Sorry didn't notice that others had posted the Gilmore Girls thing!
