I was a junior in HS.  I was in Band class.  They didn't switch our classes - everyone had their TVs on.  I remember we had early dismissal as well and Mom came to get me(since I didn't have my license yet).  Dad, who was a bit of a workaholic and NEVER left work early, met us as we were pulling out of the school.  Mom pulled over the car and Dad got out of his car and gave me the biggest bear hug.

I was a junior in college and I didn't have class until 10:30, and I turned on the news while I was ironing.  I remember thinking they were showing flashbacks of that explosion years ago, and not being able to process what was actually happening.

I was a senior in high school as well. I was in my joint enrollment (I took a couple college classes as a senior, the professors came to our school) psychology class. I remember people started talking frantically and the professor turned on the TV so we could watch the news. I saw the second plane hit as it was really happening. Everyone was shocked, dead-silent, just watching in horror. One of the girls in my class, I will never forget, her older brother had gotten a job in NYC at the WTC and she was HYSTERICALLY crying and freaking out (she was able to get in touch with him eventually and he was able to get out in time and survived). I honestly can't remember if we got sent home or not, but if we didn't, then I know we didn't actually do ANYTHING but watch the news the rest of the day. It's kind of a blur.

  • I was a sophomore in college.  Both my roommate and I had classes a little later that day so we were still sleeping when the first plane struck.  The phone rang (which is what woke us up) and I answered and it was my roommate's mom who was working in Manhattan.  She told me "Don't worry I'm alright" and then she said "You don't even know what happened do you?  Turn on the tv".    My college was only about an hour outside of NYC so lots of students were personally affected.  As a state school, many of the students are NJ residents with lots of ties to NYC.  The school canceled classes for the next two days.

I can't believe its been 12 years already.  9-11 was a big part of a reason I took a job for the Army.

Wow I feel old reading where everyone was at the time. I was a nurse in NYC at the time. I worked nights so I was sleeping when it happened. My ex called me up to tell me and I watched it on TV all day in shock. In the morning when it first happened I remember hearing non stop sirens and I was wondering what was going on. Then I found out. When I walked to work that night there were flyers for missing people everywhere and the streets were so eerily quiet. The smell of burning was awful. Work was quiet. We didnt have an ER in the hospital where I worked but we were supposed to take the patients from another hospital so they could make room for the trade center patients. Unfortunately there were no patients. Such an awful time. I will never forget.
::hugs:: I have found everyone on LI was or knows someone who was at the site that day.

  • This makes my heart so heavy. I will always think and pray for the families of those who were lost during this time. I also commend the bravery of FDNY for such an amazing response during a tragic time. The world is full of monsters and heroes. We saw the actions of each that day.

I was a freshman in high school. We had just gotten to school and no one knew what was going on. Word took longer to spread on the West Coast. By the time our homeroom classes started in the morning everyone was glued to the tv. The rest of the day went on as normal. I don't remember watching any coverage later in the day. Just in the morning.  I don't think people entirely realized the magnitude of what was going on.

I was also a freshman in high school - on the west coast. I remember watching the TV in the morning before school, thinking it was a movie, unaware I was watching the news. It wasn't until I was at school did I understand what was going on.

  • This makes me feel old, too. I was a couple of years out of college, working at my first professional job. I was ironing my clothes for the day and turned on the TV just after the first plane hit. My colleagues and I were staying at a hotel in Chicago while attending a graphic design conference. I called my boss and co-workers to tell them what was happening, and we all sat together in one room watching the footage.

There was so much misinformation in those first couple of hours. At one point, the Sears Tower was reported to be a target as well. We had just been up there the night before.

One way 9/11 changed my life was that I became far more attuned to the news and world affairs in general. I was almost desperate for some way to make sense of things and to see the perpetrators held responsible. That fall, I spent countless hours each week combing news sites for any new developments or information. I'm still a news addict to this day.

I posted this picture on FB earlier today...This was the last thing I saw on the TV that morning.  I was watching the Weather Channel and they showed this amazing, bright and beautiful shot of downtown Manhattan.  I had started my last semester of college and that day I was starting my first day at a new job. When I pulled into the parking lot the radio people said a plane had just hit the tower...and they actually even used the words "small plane".  We soon found out the truth.  It was for a Restaurant/Hotel and there was a TV in the sitting room that everyone was glued to, we watched it all happen live.  In between I helped answer phone calls from people who needed rooms because they couldn't get back into the city that night.

I am from Long Island too and know a lot of people who were in the city, or were supposed to be in the building and a few who lost someone.

9/11 is the reason my brother couldn't get out of the military in December 2001.  They put a hold on everyone...even older captains and higher ups were not allowed to retire.  By the time they released the hold on him he was almost at 20 years so he decided to stay in.  He is still in and about to hit his 24th year.  He is Navy Seal and has been to Iraq 3 times since this happened, but he loves it so much.  It's the only thing he ever wanted to do with his life.

  • I was working at a CBS station in Iowa at a sales meeting when someone told us a plane had hit and we walked into my GMs office (every TV station always has at least three TVs in every room turned to the major networks) and saw the second plane hit the south tower live on three big screens.  Because stations went commercial free for a good week I don't remember working much at all aside from just sitting at my desk and staring.  And each night going home glued to the TV crying.  I was 23 and drove the 4 hours home that weekend just to be able to give my mom a hug.  My dad wasn't home because all planes were grounded and he was on a business trip to Florida so had to rent a car and drive all the way back to Chicago.

  • I was a senior in HS at the time. I live on the West Coast, so I saw the footage early before I went to school. I didn't realize how big of a deal it was, just thought it was an accident. I was in the youth Red Cross and went to the local HQ after school got out and assisted people with getting their blood drawn. I remember how many people showed up to try and help out, we even had to divert some to another location.

  • I was in 8th grade Spanish class. My principal came over the intercom and had a moment of silence. We had no idea what was going on or what he was talking about. My teacher turned on the news and we watched the towers falling. After that the principal came over the intercom again and instructed the TVs be turned off and class resume as normal. Lots of kids got pulled out of school that day and all of us were frantic because we seemed to be in the dark. There were rumors that Disney World was going to be attacked (I live in FL) and a bunch of friends were just crying all day thinking we were all going to die. I got home and turned the tv on and finally started learning what was actually going on. I didn't fully comprehend it but I remember with a lot of clarity that I could hear people screaming in the news clips and it was terrifying. It was an awful day!
