December 2010 Moms

mom's with 2....

Do your 2 share a bedroom? We have had the boys in separate bedrooms from the get-go.  Part of me would like them to share, I have good memories of sharing with my sister growing up.  When did you combine the 2 kiddos?  DH is fairly adamant that J is too noisy and would wake A.  I don't know, A has always slept through J's motn wakings and we have some good nights where J makes it to about 4-5 in the morning before waking, he will nurse and then pass back out until 630-730 depending on the day.
If your little ones share a room, when did you start? any issues with combining them if they didn't share initially?

Re: mom's with 2....

  • our two are not together yet.  we are hoping to put them together by the time duncan is 18 months (so two months from now).
they have occasionally shared a room when we had guests in town, but it was a huge juggling act.  oliver had to be asleep for his nap before we brought duncan in, or he would act like a goof....whispering and giggling.  then at night, duncan wakes up a lot because
    1) he is sick a lot
    2) teething wakes him WAY more than it did oliver
so when they share, we are on our tiptoes, ready to get in there so that duncan doesn't wake oliver.
    3)  duncan wakes before oliver in the morning.  once duncan is squarely on one nap, bedtimes and wake times should be more similar.

i figure at some point they are going to have to figure it out.  they might be super tired for a week or two, but then it will be ok.

  • I have the same concerns that your DH has.  I think with my boys, though, 1 would wake up and cause the other 1 to wake up too (not necessarily B just waking up G).  Then I'd have 2 kids to deal with in the motn or early morning wake ups.  And I do not want that at all.  I'm not even willing to risk it lol.

I shared a bedroom with my older sister growing up from a very very young age til she was in high school and I was in jr high.  It was ok rooming with her but I don't think that made us closer or anything.  There was only 1 time where I woke up scared in the motn and climbed up to her bunk to sleep beside her.

Our house only has 3 bedrooms so if we do have anymore kids, the boys will have to share a room.  But thats only *if* we have another LO.  So, I'll just deal with it when/if I get there lol.

  • A is in the nursery, J is in his big boy room.  They will probably remain that way until we are ready to TTC again, or once we have a BFP and are out of 1st trimester so A doesn't feel like he's being kicked out like he's out of his room on Monday and Wednesday his new sibling is here.  A is a great sleeper and has been STTN for a while now, but I worry more about the morning.  A wakes up earlier than J does and wouldn't want to wake him up, as he's dropping more and more naps as it is.  So they probably will not share a room until A is probably 18-24 months old, which would put J at right 4, give or take 3 months.
  • Right now they are in their own separate rooms. We definitely plan on them sharing a room in the future - even if we don't have any more kids. We'd love to have the nursery back as an office/guest bedroom.

We'll probably make the transition once DS1 is done napping and they are on a similar night time schedule. Probably in another year or so.

  • If I ever finally get pregnant and have a third, my two will share. I'm looking forward to it, I'm hoping they'll bond. Although my oldest really enjoys having her own space now so it may not go down as well as I'm imagining.

  • I don't plan to ever have my kids share a room.  Even if we happen to have another one we'll do what we have to so everyone has their own room.  I really think people need somewhere to have their own space.  (this is just from my experience with my brothers sharing a room growing up.  They are not really friends now.)

  • They have their own rooms. We have 4 bedrooms so if for some reason we had another one, they would still have their own room.

  • Our 2nd child is going to take over our office. Because we like having an office, we'd like to have them share when LO #2 can fully STTN (11+ hrs), hopefully sometime between 12-18 mo. BUT we're also team green so that might change our decision on things if LO is a girl. I'm actually fine with a boy and a girl sharing a room but I'd want to read more about it before jumping into that, and I know it would have to stop at some point. Granted, by then we probably will have bought a house (we are renting now) so we can just get a place with more bedrooms.
