Scary bedroom

We moved into a bed about a month ago and moved his room around too. For the last few weeks that shadows have been scaring him. I don't know if its the moved around bedroom and new shadows or just a typical toddler fear, but I feel bad. He's started calling his room his scary bedroom. Anyone have any tips to help him not be so nervous??

Re: Scary bedroom

  • Do you guys watch TV? Griffin loves Daniel Tigers neighborhood on PBS - and there is an episode about scary things, specifically some shadows in the bedroom and then they go investigate and there's a cute little song that goes with it.
Anyway, maybe this is weird but that show has really helped Griffin with random things, esp the little song.
The episode is the one with Prince Wednesday's sleepover. Not sure if you can find it online maybe?

  • J is scared of a lot of things now that he wasn't before.  In his bedroom we have to check under his bed and all around for dinosaurs every night because he says "dinosaurs going to get me".  WTF?!  Where he got that I have no idea.
He also seems to wake up almost every night at some point and cries.  We put in a pretty bright nightlight and he still has the light up soother that he can turn on but I don't know what else to do.  Some nights he's shaking and saying "I need to go to your bed, can't stay here"  It's so sad.

  • Great idea janeanne! We love that show. Ill have to look around and see if I can find it. I found a book about scary things at the library too that I'm hoping helps!
  • We love Daniel tiger too! A's favorite phrase is "you can take a turn, then give it back" lol from their sharing episode. A isn't scared of the dark or his bedroom but he does get scared in some parts of random cartoons or Disney movies. And apparently a few weeks ago there was a broken robot that was spewing letters out of its mouth on the leapfrog scout show that he flipped out over. Dh said it took him an hour to calm him down and convince him that the robot wasn't real and that Dh threw it away since he was broken. It's been a month or so and at least once a day A will say "go away robot, outside in the trash can!" It's so odd. It's like he's chanting the bad or scary stuff to stay away.

  • I am dealing with this with my DD as well and I was suggested to get a spray bottle with some lavender essential oil and water in it to spray each night around the room as a "monster spray" to deter anything from coming in and the lavender will help to relax them. It is worth a shot.

  • Doc McStuffins has an episode dealing with night time shadows as well.  Sir Kirby is scared of sleeping in Doc's room because of he's afraid of the dark and she shows him that the shadows aren't scary, they are just things in the room.
  • DS sucks at sleeping & scary noises, etc are just one of his reasons for waking at night/fighting bedtime.

We have a Bernstein Bears book called Spooky Shadows that might help out. I always reference it to remind DS not be afraid.

I am also about to try @Ashley188's suggestion, too.  I have heard of that before, but we've never tried it.

Another thing that helps is leaving his door open. We used to close it, but he feels more secure if we leave it open.

  • Thanks for all the suggestions! I'm going to stock up on books and movies and try the spray and see how it goes. It's nice to know he's not the only scardy cat around!
