No car seat base?

Does anyone know if a car seat is just as safe without the base? Even when installed according to the instructions, it just looks and feels so much less stable. Makes me nervous. I always use a car seat base with my babies, but others don't. I just get a knot in my stomach when my babies take off with other people, and they are only strapped in using the seatbelt. Just wondering if I should worry about it or let it go.

    Who are they going with? I would not use it with out the base just because I agree they feel sort of wobbly to me without it

    It's safe without the base if installed properly.

    Most hospitals and local fire stations have instructors that are trained and qualified to help you install your car seat.  These places also typically get in car seat donations as well for families who may not be able to afford them.

    Oh and bonus, check your fire station....no girl minds going to the fire station hehe.

    Most are made to use with or without the base.  Just check the manual and make sure that you're installing it correctly.

    We used our carseat without base while on a recent trip. There were instructions on the car seat for how to use it without the base in the car so I would think if it wasn't safe there is no way graco would have those instructions in there.

    As long as its installed correctly, it's absolutely just as safe.

    The base is for convenience.

    Ditto @poppyc8. Graco has directions on how to install it without the base both in the manual and on the seat itself, so I'm sure it's ok.

    You might want to buy a second base. That's what we did. One stays permanently in one car and the other one we're always removing and bringing with us if we're going in someone else's car. I believe it was $60, but well worth it to me. You could look around for used ones for less.. I've seen a lot for sale.
