Doula

Did anyone here have a doula at your birth?

I'm planning on becoming a doula in the future after we are done having kids and they are grown a little bit.

What was your experience with a doula? What did you like most about having one? What didn't you like about having one? If you didn't have a doula do you wish you would have?

Re: Doula

  • Not my style, but ever since I had DS, I've wished I were a Gyno or an L&D nurse! Talk about baby fever..

This EXACTLY -- or any kind of nurse, really.  I feel that way after every time I have a reason to be in a hospital.  I may have missed my calling :-)

  • I had post partum doulas and LOVED them. I didn't have one for my actual birth, though.

  • I did. She was fantastic. She charged $500 and I thought she was worth every penny and then some. I love my DH dearly, but he was not terribly helpful during labor and delivery. I was all set to go natural, used a midwife, did Hypnobabies, the whole nine yards. Everything went smoothly until I got to 9 centimeters and stayed there...and stayed there...and stayed there. I ended up with a c/s after 32 hours of labor. I was so unbelievably angry when it happened, and I think it would have been ten times worse without my doula. There is nothing I disliked about having her. She prevented a bad situation from being so much worse.

  • I didn't have one this time, but I think if I do it again I will have a doula.  Now that I know how much going natural hurts I dont know if I have the mental strength to do it again without help!

  • My friend happens to be a doula, but I would have hired one anyway because having her there was such a huge help. She helped keep me focused on my breathing and helped me find comfortable positions. DS came much faster than anyone anticipated, so the midwife didn't arrive until I wanted to push. My doula thought ahead and had the nurses start filling the tub, get extra towels and dim the lights. DH was so freaked out by how fast everything was happening that he didnt think of any of those things. Since the midwife wasn't there for most of my labor, it was nice to feel like we were a little team and had someone looking out for us. I would absolutely hire a doula next time if may friend couldn't be there.
