He thinks this baby is his little brother or sister because he's "too young to be an uncle" LOL
I'm trying to find a children's book that explains what is going on, but all I can find are "I'm going to be a brother/sister" for little kids.
I know it's not that common to have siblings 25 yrs apart but geez... there has to be a book out there somewhere explaining it.
He just tells me and my sister that we're funny when we tell him he's going to be an uncle. And my step-mom and dad can't get it thru to him that it's not his sibling. He even told his teacher at school about it.
Re: My 5yr old brother is very confused ...
that's too funny. My 10 year old cousin asked me yesteday if I was still pregnant. There have been 2 of us that have had m/c recently, so I guess this is a hard concept for a 10 year old.
Gosh, that's a tough one. I tried to google it for you, but nothing very applicable came up - but you'er right - I'm sure there's something out there.
Has anyone tried drawing him a picture of the family tree and how he fits into it (and how your baby will fit into it)?
Too cute. I think it's more common than most people think. My little brother became an uncle when he was only 4 or 5 as well. And my cousin has an uncle that is actually younger than him. And I know that when I was in high school some of the students had uncles & aunts just 1 or 2 grades ahead of them.
I don't think my brother really thinks of himself as an uncle though since they are so close in age - it's more like siblings or cousins.
Bellaciao, that's a good idea. Maybe I'll try it when we go over for Christmas...
I think it's funny too but I don't want him to be upset when he finally realizes that's its not his sibling... Little kids can be really sensitive
Kids are so crazy, but oh so cute!
I read a book as a kid where the aunt/nephew were opposite in age. I can't remember what the book was called and it was probably a young adult/late elementary-appropriate novel. I think the other "issue" in the book was that the protagonist girl had epilepsy. Not helpful for the 5 y/o, but pointing out something that I know is out there.
The Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan movie based on "The Shop Around the Corner" also has this situation. But again, too mature for a 5 y.o. to understand...
