Preterm labor question?

I had DS 5 weeks early so, the NP said this time around they would give me 17P shots. Do any of you know what these are? Did you use them?

  • Yuppers.  This is my third time doing them!

They are really no biggie.  I started them at 20 weeks with my daughter (when we learned my cervix was too short and I had been having contractions ... made it to 36w0d before delivering though so that was great!).  With my son I started them at 16 weeks, made it to 38w and I started them again this time at 16 weeks.

Once a week you just get the shot in your butt cheek.  It doesn't hurt, however my advice would be to really massage your butt cheek after you get them because that crap is THICK and I've found that if I don't, I get a hard ball at the injection site and for me it will be tender and sometimes itch and annoy me (which of course by scratching it I would make it about 100 times worse).

    That's about it!

  • Oh I should also add, I did them until I delivered my daughter, but with my son they stopped them at 37 weeks and will again this time too.

  • You know, I honestly don't know.  Mine is called Hydroxyprogesterone and I know that I have to get it from a compounding pharmacy, not a Walgreens or whatever so I'm assuming they aren't exactly the same?  But I'm not really sure!

I never have had any of the same side effects either.  I did Prometrium in pill form, but it would make me super dizzy and stuff so I always had to take them at night right before falling asleep.  I get the shots whenever during the day and have never had any side effects at all.

  • Hey! I saw your post on High Risk last night. I think it's progesteron shots or the steroid shots to build the lungs in case the baby comes early. I can't remember what it was called but I had the steroid shots at 31 weeks.

  • I know a lot of the girls on high risk have progesterone shots to help make it further along in their pregnancy.
