How does your child wake up?

What does your child do or how do they act when they first wake up in the morning?

Olivia is in this lovely phase where she wakes up and immediately starts whining and then screeching. She used to play and babble in her crib but that doesn't happen anymore. Waking up to a whiney baby is driving me up the wall. Giving her a bottle/sippy cup works for approximately 2 minutes and then she's back to screeching. Anyone else in the same boat?

  • Hmm, the thing that bugs me about our situation is that Olivia is always in a great mood in the morning. As soon as I lift her out of the crib, she's happy as a clam for hours. Can't she just let her mommy wake up happily?

  • Cosette goes immediately to standing with a pathetic little cry in the morning.  Not horrible, just sad. Then she immediately lays her head back down on my shoulder and snuggles in. Love this moment actually.

  • @emilypc I've tried and she's too active. She's just interested in pulling things off of our night stands and trying to dive off of the bed.

Id say maybe 15% of the time, K is like this. It is usually on the nights where I am pretty positive he didn't get enough sleep. When he wakes up cranky, he also usually wakes up earlier. When he wakes up later, he usually wakes up happy. I leave him in his crib (unless he gets to the "bloody murder" level of crying) and usually within 5-10 minutes he clams down and goes back to either playing, hanging out, or occasionally back to sleep. Other times he continues to wail and If I don't have to work that day, I go get him and rock him in his room. He never goes back to sleep when I rock him, but he chills in my lap and I can rest until a more decent hour.

ETA: I think sometimes he just needs a few minutes to fully wake up, and once he does, he is fine. I have even noticed that if I go get him during one of his fits, nothing makes him happy and I am dealing with a cranky baby most of the morning. If I let him work it out on his own in hi crib and go get him when he's done crying, he is happy! Babies are so weird....

Oliver has never really been a happy smiley waker-upper. He usually wakes up crying and I must come get him right away, or else screaming complete with tears ensues. Every once in a while he'll do just a little cooing or whining but that's rare.
This is pretty much us.  I am so jealous of the moms with babies that play in their cribs.

Me too! Waking up to whining really grates at your nerves and no one needs that first thing.

  • Eleanor sings in the morning. Loudly. She calls the dogs, watches them play, sings some more. Plays, lolls, Yells for us when she's had enough.

  • They will both play quietly in their cribs for up to about 30 min. Depends if they've got a poopy diaper too. Some of that time is spent throwing out everything from their cribs.
  • Emery wakes up and starts talking and playing with her teddy bear. She always wakes up in a great mood its her happiest time of day lol.

  • Another whiner here, but she used to talk and coo so sweetly that there's hope that baby will come back. And lately she'll just lie there and whine, won't even stand up for us to grab her when we come in so we have to lean over the damn railing. And often she's backwards, or at the far end, and hard to reach. If we don't come in soon enough it escalates to full-on crying, and then to screaming.

Even a minor event in the life of a child is an event of that child's world and thus a world event.

  • If she wakes up before 9 am, she is whiny and asks to nurse back to sleep. If it is after 9 am, then she is happy and chatty.

  • I leave books in there for him at night, so in the morning he's usually reading and chattering to himself.

She is on our schedule, so super late!  10:30-11 pm on average.

  • OMG this morning is terrible. I literally want to pull my hair out and run away and it's only 7:20! I'm thinking about taking away her afternoon nap so she goes to sleep earlier and will hopefully wake up more rested. How can anyone start a productive day with a shrieking banshee baby?!
