My new, yucky pregnancy symptom

Over the past week I have developed sore, swollen gums.. I even taste blood sometimes. I googled it and apparently this is a common symptom. I take care of my teeth.. brushing as recommended.. although I don't floss everyday (I know, I know.. I need to start doing this again). I have noticed over the last couple days my gums are sore when I brush my teeth. I am thinking of switching over to a soft bristle toothbrush.

I have had the blood taste a couple other time during this pregnancy.. I just figured it was the blood thinner injection that the Dr put me on (for my MTHFR blood clotting gene mutation). Apparently it is just a side effect of the pregnancy hormones.  I have an appointment on the 11th, and I will bring it up then to see if there is any concern other than just it being normal.

Anyone else having this?

  • Yep, my dentist said to use listerine twice a day and floss, but that it might not clear up. I do think the listerine helps though.

I figured listerine was a no no during pregnancy because it has alcohol in it?

  • Yep, it's actually called pregnancy gingivitis.  I had it so bad last time there were many foods I just couldn't eat because my gums were too sore.  Even if it wasn't something hard or chewy, sometimes even spicey foods or foods with a little kick would irritate my gums.

My soreness got better within a few weeks and I think by week 20 it was gone, I don't really remember though.  So far I haven't gotten it yet this time (knock on wood).

  • My gums are tender. You should switch to a super soft brush and take it easy on the gumline.
I use listerine, havent considered that I shouldnt use it...I dont think it will hurt anything.
  • I'm just going to second what the other ladies said. I went to the dentist this week and they told me it was common to have sensitive gums. Just take care of my teeth as best I can and told me to use listerene if I was able to to help kill germs. You aren't drinking it so it should be fine.

  • If you are really concerned about the alcohol in the Listerine, they do make an alcohol free version :)  I'm not sure if it works as well, but it may help with your peace of mind..

I regularly use a mouthwash that doesn't have alcohol in it. There are not many options at the drugstore, but you can find some.
  • This was one of my first symptoms of pregnancy.
It's just part if the fun.
