If you've gone to Labor & Delivery

How has the hospital billed you, outpatient or ER visit?

4years ago, it was an ER visit (200.00 copy). Now checks are considered outpatient, and my insurance processes outpatient as first having to meet my deductible before any bill is covered.

I had one this pregnancy... $500.00!

Re: If you've gone to Labor & Delivery

  • I was just there last night but I'm not sure how we are being billing. They just took my information and when they discharged me this morning they never mentioned the bill. We are hoping that it was billed as an ER visit because our insurance covers that 100%.

  • I think our labor and delivery is 20%. I'm pretty sure they are going to charge us two days though because I arrived there at 9:30 and didn't leave until 3:00.

  • Oh dang. Our ER is $125 but anything maternity is covered.
  • I went in about a month ago--even registered through ER because it was late at night--but I haven't gotten a bill yet. Now I'm wondering if I should be nervous!

  • First time I was only there a few hours, was billed as outpatient. Second time I ended up being admitted for 3 days, so that was billed different.

First time in, I went to the ER and they sent me straight to L&D, didn't even register me for the ER. I'm guessing if you didn't spend anytime in the ER it will probably be billed through L&D.

Not with this pregnancy, but w my last one I went twice before actually going into labor. It was billed as an ER visit, even though it was a trip to LD. $150 a visit.

  • Mine was just billed as a regular office visit (covered 100%), except the lunch I got while I was there. I got a random $7.50 bill in the mail for the lunch, lol.

  • Mine was billed as outpatient; I was there about 5 hours. They billed $2,178 and I was responsible for $608. Some went towards satisfying the deductible and some was coinsurance. Honestly I didn't think it was that bad; I've had ER visits that were a lot more expensive.
  • Cag, I think it has to do with the policy we have now, 4 yrs ago we had United Health (awesome) and now we have NHP (they suck).

The ER visits, with both insurances, as long as you are not admitted its $200.00 copay which covers any emergency tests and procedures. The hospital, as they code it, doesn't bill L&D checks as an ER visit but an outpatient procedure.

Unless this baby has me in an ungodly amount of pain or my water breaks, there is no way I will be back in L&D.

You might not have a choice - if you need an ER visit, many ER's won't touch a pregnant woman after a certain number of weeks and will send them straight to L&D.

  • This happened to me too. Around 26 weeks I had to go in with serious pain, doc thought I may have had an infection. ER sent me straight to labor and delivery. I got billed as an outpatient after have some testing and checking on contractions. It was more costly than ER but did go towards my deductible. At the end of the day the extra couple hundred was well worth baby boy being ok. On the bright side my deductible is now fulfilled so if there are any other visits its covered.
  • Mine was billed as outpatient.
