This is why I don't participate in the FFFC or UO, I know how terrible I am at expressing my thoughts online. I still don't think I have been able to express myself very well, and I apologize for that. I'll try to sum up and then I'm walking away from this thread: schools should have a dress code and that dress code should apply to every student at the school; girls should never be touched/harassed/shamed because of what they wear; boys should not be shamed because of a bodily function that they can't control. Sorry for starting this whole mess and for being really bad at expressing my thoughts in a succinct manner.

Do they not linger over those photos because of their strong moral compass? Or is it because, um, their mom deletes all those girls from their Facebook? Hmmm...

Who had schools without an air conditioner????
I live in the Deep South and we have air conditioners in school. I just can't imagine not having one.
Other schools may have snow days, but the one and only time I remember having school cancelled was because the AC was broken in the main building and they couldn't relocate all the classes, so everything got cancelled. Sitting in a classroom when it's 115+ with no AC just isn't happening.

Yeah - our a/c went out for 3 days my freshman year. No school! We also didn't go to school when it snowed.
We had the fingertip rule for skirts/shorts. A friend of mine got busted and the guidance counselor used duct tape to extend the length! They then took a polaroid of it and put it up on a board by the office. It was shaming yes, but my friend thought it was funny.

At the high school I worked for, our "dress code" was more of a uniform. Khaki pants, white button down shirt with collar, brown or black shoes, tie (both male and female). Actually, it helped with our school culture a lot, but we have central air, so there is no need for shorts or tank tops.
The bad part? Teachers had to wear it too. Whenever I was walking around the neighborhood, people would think I was a student. It was SO frustrating.
I never broke dress code. I wore a skirt that was "too short" just once in middle school, and my moms best friend told her, it was thrown out. Honestly though, I didn't do it on purpose. In HS, we didn't have a dress code. In college, I wished we had.
I agree with dress codes, and I think we should keep them professional in nature. However, I do not agree with siting bra straps for girls, while boys are held to a different standard. There is a gender bias noted in OP that should be addressed first and foremost.

I'm in the Midwest, and our schools had no air back in my days (80s-90s). They remodeled both our junior highs, so they have air, and some of the elementaries do, but the high school is still without air and a few elementaries - they are so old that it's not cost effective. One elementary school we have is over 100 years old, and it's falling apart.
So last week when it was so flippin' hot, they cancelled school Thurs and Friday because of the heat, even though half the schools are air-conditioned, but it had to be straight across the board. It was 105 in some of the high school rooms!

Hey guize, did you know that before the 1920's, there was no "Air Conditioning"? Crazy, huh?
Imagine what people did before electricity.
My house that's rented now was built without air conditioner. I can't imagine!!!! It had an attic fan and LOTS of windows.
My air conditioner went out the other evening in a storm for 3 hours. It was 86 degrees in my house at the end of the 3 hours and this is after a rain storm and in the evening. I seriously was looking for my hurricane window unit. I don't think I would have made it in the 20's.
I agree with dress code policies so long as they're being enforced equally across the board. I couldn't tell from your post, but are they not enforcing it with boys? If the boys of One Direction are of any example, tank tops are popular with them too. They should be enforcing it for everyone. All of our dress code policies did not distinguish between what sex could or could not wear what clothing.
Doesn't her school have A/C? Why can't your daughter just wear a light camisole if she *has* to wear a tank? What about finding her shirts with cap sleeves? Is having to wear some sort of sleeve *that* much of difference?
I grew up in a hot and humid (tropical) environment, I never felt the need to dress inappropriately to school. I mean, school is a formal institution. Don't you want to teach your daughter how to present herself properly in a professional setting? Plus, if you wore something inappropriate to school when I was going, you'd be put into Internal Suspension for the day. And yes, I did have a friend that thought school was a night club. She wore clubbing outfits every day and lived in IS. I PPH'd that girl, but I never understood it.
Hell, we even have a dress code at work. Tanks are not allowed here. And I'm not talking from the standpoint that tanks look sexual in ANY of this, I just don't think they look professional on men or women.
On another note; I also think GradNight went down hill (and was eventually cancelled) for many reasons, one of them is from the fact that they quit enforcing the dress code. I noticed that when I chaperoned, the kids would be just a little more well-behaved when they had to dress more nicely. But that's just an observation of mine. I could be totally off-base.
I need to read the guidebook, but when I asked about the boys, the secretary mumbled, "Well, we don't uh..have too many boys wearing tank tops." So? If girls can't wear them, they can't either.
They do have A/C in the school now, so she's not going to melt, but if the policy is specifically because bra straps can show, that's not cool with me.
They also have a shitty (lol pun) bathroom policy, you only get two bathroom breaks the whole semester. You can get your grade dropped if you request more than that. What if you have to poop? Change a tampon? They expect all the kids to pee in 3 minutes between classes.
How could you get to your locker, then the bathroom, pee, change a tampon if you need too, wash your hands and then get to your next class on 3rd floor in 180 seconds?
I told DD if she needs to go and she gets in trouble for having to use her bowels during class I will back her up for it. RESIST TEH AUTHORITY.
We had a rule like that I got a doctors note and so did every other girl, 3 minute passing period to run all the way across school and take care of your lady business, IMPOSSIBLE! That rule went away very quickly.
Not having to ask to use the bathroom was my first favourite thing about University.

Kudos to the Old West pioneers especially, because back in the day those bitches had to wear petticoats, corsets and long sleeves in this heat. I like AZ and all, but no way would I live here without AC.
I can't say that I ever violated the policy, as I wore a uniform from 4th-12th grade. And the policy in HS was pretty lax at the time, although I've heard they've become more strict. We could wear sweat pants and sweatshirt with the school logo, if we didn't feel like wearing the skirt or navy slacks.
@tealowl I feel your pain. My dd's dress code policy is the same and it fucking ticks me off. They switched it last year, and the last week of school my older dd (who was a senior) wore a tank top every single day in protest. She said if they were sexually excited by her shoulders that was their problem, not hers. They never sent her home, but this year we got an email that it will not be tolerated again. So my dd gets to sweat her ass off every day, but I see guys there with their entire sleeves cut off down the whole side of their shirt. Yeah, that's fair. Midwest "values" tick me off. A lot.
I went to catholic school up until 8th grade, so we had uniforms. The rule was socks were to be pulled up to our knees and our skirts hit just above the knees. But, I was a rebel and a group of us rolled the socks down to our ankle! Yeah, it looked stupid... But we were staging a rebellion. We all got called into the principal's office (Sister Mary Elizabeth) and got reprimanded for the calf show.
Our schools definitely don't have AC growing up and I don't think they do now. But in New York State schools don't start until after Labor Day so there's maybe 3-4 weeks of whole year it would possibly be used. There are some schools that have it but that's because they run summer school too. I also don't have central air in my house. We have one window unit that we use when we sleep. There really is little need for central air where I live.

My parents didn't get A/C until a couple years ago. We lived. You get used to it.
Last year during hurricane Isaac we were without electricity for 3 days. It was not bad because it rained and was windy. On day 3 the lights came back on and I was getting dressed sweating down with the air on but the 3 days before with no air I never sweated.
I'm sure you adjust but I'd still prefer my air conditioner

I think once you have AC it's a pain in the ass to go back to not having it. Growing up I never had AC and I was pretty much fine. But since living in an apartment with central air, I have a hard time walking outside in the summer without feeling sick. It's 66-70 degrees in our apartment year round. I love it. But last year our AC broke and it wouldn't cool lower than 78 and I thought I was going to die. It was awful. Way worse than anything I dealt with before having AC.

We did not have AC in school ever and it gets crazy hot in NYC in June. We did not have a dress code, but we had to go through metal detectors and scanners every morning so I guess there were bigger fish to fry. We also didn't have working bathrooms. I mean there was water in the toilets and they flushed, but there was never toilet paper or soap, or running water in the sinks. No one ever used the bathroom. Like ever. It just wasn't a thing. If I had to go to the bathroom that bad, I would go home. We didn't get lunch either because of overcrowding. Hooray for NYC public schools!

There have been several times in my life that we've been without ac due to hurricanes. I've never had a problem, but then again I keep my house between 75 and 80. 66 - 70 sounds like freezing wintertime outside. How can you stand it? I'd die.
I've never dealt with the heat very well. I've lived in Indiana pretty much my entire life and didn't own a winter coat until college. Even then I almost never wore it. A sweatshirt has always been plenty to keep me warm. I sweat year round and almost never get cold.
