Pregnant after 35

Newly pg & turning 35

Hi everyone,

I had my first two DCs while I was in my 20s and early 30s and now I'm pregnant again but will be turning 35 in less than 2 weeks. Might be a strange question, but will my prenatal care be different this time? Is 35 still considered "advanced maternal age"?? I feel young but I know that doctors tend to view 35 as being in a higher risk category....

  • Congrats! It really depends on your dr. Some treat it as no big deal while some like to be more cautious. At 35 it could really go either way. If your dr does bring up AMA don't let it freak you out. Any extra testing or monitoring is just a precaution. It may actually be a bonus as you may get to have more ultrasounds and see baby more often!

  • Congrats!  You are young!  yes most consider 35 the beginging of AMA, just depends on your practice on how they handle it.  I hope you have a wonderful pregnancy
  • Congrats!!
Echoing PP's, it does vary from dr to dr.
One factor they might consider is if you had any issues with your previous LO's, as well. Being 35 is a slight gradual increase in some risks, but as my dr says, it's not something that automatically changes things.

  • Welcome!
Over 35 is also the age that some insurance companies start covering some of the advanced genetic testing for Down's etc.

  • Congrats :) I def think we are young ;) I'll just share that in april, they wouldn't talk to me about ama testing etc. In may, right after my 35 bday they asked me if anyone had talked to me about (all ama tests you can think of.) Lol cracked me up. Then I asked towards the end if I was going to be getting another ultrasound at some point? They said no since im so healthy and no problems. Ok. Then nxt visit..."oh btw since you are old you need to schedule weekly ultrasounds and non stress tests etc. (They were much more tactful n nice of course!) :) anyway it's been fun and im not easily worried or offended at least. I send best wishes your way for a super great pregnancy! :) (im now 35 weeks and ftm btw...) :)

  • I was 34 when I got pregnant but turned 35 during my pregnancy.  At the first appointment with my doctor she mentioned that I was AMA since I would be 35 when I delivered.  She said that since I was AMA I could go through genetic counseling.  We decided not to do the genetic counseling.   My doctor has never brought up AMA again since that 1st appointment.
