Baby's head measuring small

Hi everyone! I am 36 weeks pregnant today and had a growth scan yesterday. For the past 3 ultrasounds my babies Hc and BPD is falling below the 5th percentile. Has this happened to anyone else? It's causing some concern for me but my doctors haven't said anything. Thank you!

Re: Baby's head measuring small

  • Neither of my kids measured small on the ultrasounds and yet both we're born wih relatively small heads.

DS was nearly nine pounds (95th% height and weight) with an only 10th% head size. His head has since caught up and he is perfect, never had a problem.

DD was born altogether 5th% and has since grown to enormous proportions (she's 80th all around now). Again she is perfect, never had a problem.

Two lessons - ultrasounds can be wildly wrong and even if your child is born with a small head, it doesn't necessarily denote a problem.

Lastly, If your doctor isn't worried, you shouldn't be.

  • I have also heard that ultrasounds can be very inaccurate. My first daughter was also born in the low percentile for head circumference, and there was never a problem. When I went in for my ultrasound yesterday for this baby, his head is measuring bigger--a week ahead of where we're supposed to be. I wouldn't worry about it.

  • I know ultrasounds can be quite inaccurate but I just wanted to see if anyone else had this happen and baby had a normal head at birth. I trust the doctors would have said something if they thought it was an issue.
  • Lurking.... My kids never had growth us, but dd was 3rd percentile all around at birth, and DS was 5th. They both are perfectly healthy. So even if the baby is small, it doesn't necessarily mean something isn't right. And like pp said, growth us are notoriously incorrect.
