***Update*** Hcg at 171...charts have such wide ranges! Looking for feedback

I'm pregnant with my first pregnancy. I don't know my dpo because I recently stopped taking the pill, didn't get my period, and got pregnant. I think I'm about 4 weeks along. My hcg is 171 as of yesterday, ER doctor says that's way too low, and that I'm probably miscarrying. I have another beta test tomorrow. I've checked hcg charts online and in What to Expect, and it shows I'm within normal range. But the chart the hospital gave me says I should be between 1000-50,000. I'm so confused. Anyone had a number close to mine at about 4 .5 weeks? Had second round of betas this morning. It dropped to 64. I mostly knew this news was coming but I still had hope. I hope I get my period soon- I just want to be able to try again. Good luck to everyone, and I hope to be able to join another birth month club soon.

  • I think the doubling time is more important. I was at 112 at 3w6d, so basically 4 weeks, and my doctor wasn't worried at all because it was almost triple my test 48 hours earlier. Doctors who scare people after the first test should just keep their mouths shut.

  • Thanks! I know all I can do is wait and see, and my defense mechanisms kick in so I've gone from upset, to thinking about trying again, to mad to hopeful. I have a ob appt. Monday with a non-ER doctor. Love and luck to us all!
  • My hcg was 105 at 4 weeks. 4 days later it was 565, which is a doubling time of 40 hours. The doubling time is more important than the number. Yours sounds like a good starting point if you truly are 4 weeks.

  • My HCG was 14 at 14 dpo. 14. Three days later it was 50. 8 days after that it was 940. I am 6 weeks tomorrow and going in for an ultrasound to ease my mind. I was also told I was definitely miscarrying. But the numbers are more than doubling every 48 hours so the RE is hopeful.
  • Mine was 167 at 12 dpo. I didn't want it redone because that's a high hcg for me and I didn't want the stress of wondering if multiples or not.

  • Mine was 53 at 4 weeks. I did blood work 2 days later and it was 104 so it doubled like it should. My doctor said that as long as the number is doubling, then it's a good sign. She also told me 53 seemed low, but I was also only 4 weeks and anything over 15 was considered pregnant. I'm going in for an ultrasound next week (I'll be 6 weeks) just to make sure everything is forming correctly.

I agree with doctors scaring people. I appreciate the fact that they can help warn us, but unless they know for sure that someone is miscarrying, they shouldn't tell them that. :(
  • Thank you all for the feedback. I can't wait until tomorrow!

  • my very first beta was 128. the second was in the the 450's. the third was 4,300. and my latest one on tuesday was 33,000!! like everyone else says, its not the first number, its how they double! we had our first ultrasound yesterday and got to see and hear the heartbeat!!! good luck :)
  • I think it was the doctor's overall reaction that has me freaked out.  Mind you, it was an ER doctor, and I went to the hospital at 5 am and saw one doctor to explain my situation, then when I got my blood work back a new doctor was on shift.  I don't think the second doctor really listened to me, and I think he thought I was further along.  He just flat out said I was miscarrying because my number was so low and because the u/s didn't show anything.  Well the u/s tech told me that if I conceived when I think I did that the u/s WOULDN'T show anything because its too soon.  But the doctor was adamant that I'm miscarrying.  I'm not bleeding, I don't have pain.  I have some brown spotting, and there was brown discharge when they did the u/s (trans vaginal).  The more I read about the numbers, the more angry I feel about my experience in the ER.  Only time will tell though, and in about 12 hours I will head back for my 2nd round of bloodwork.  Whether its good news or bad though, I appreciate all of your input.  Thanks ladies!
