I also may be a hypocrite because I am the first one to judge people and tell them they are stupid for changing their hygiene products, not eating lunch meat, soft cheeses etc. while pregnant. I guess alcohol is just different for me because I witness the effects of it everyday.
@lilmama412 And I don't fault you for your opinion or your decision in the slightest! I just don't appreciate organizations that purport to be the experts on the subject twisting findings to say something the studies didn't actually find. The intentions are good but the science is bad.

This, I do not plan on drinking myself during pregnancy.

I don't drink during pregnancy. Regardless of how safe moderate consumption is, abstaining is safEST, and the alcohol just isn't that important to me. I don't like how many scare tactics there are surrounding this issue, though, and I think it really does come down to not trusting women's judgement.
Mama to a little girl born July 2011 and a little boy born April 2014!
I had a peach wine slushy (like the Tastfully Simple drink mixes) over the weekend. It was delicious. And I'm still drinking a glass of wine every one to two weeks. I do like ODouls for the non-alcoholic beer, drank that pretty regularly with DS. And had a few puffs on a very nice cigar with him as we'll. He's fine, because I know my limits better than any doctor.

I work with kids and had to take a multi-day conference on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Here is what I learned...they say that there is no "safe" amount. There are some women who can get wasted all throughout their pregnancy and their child is just fine. Then there are some women who can have only a few glasses of wine throughout their entire pregnancy and their kid has full blown Fetal Alcohol. So really, there is no safe amount, and there is no way of knowing. This conference was bashing big time on OB's who tell women its okay to drink. A lot of new research is coming out saying that minor cases of Fetal Alcohol are actually showing up as ADHD/ADD, ODD and Aspergers. This is partly why we have a growing number of children with these disorders.
With DS I drank a glass of wine occasionally. However, after going to that conference, which by the way was lead by some of the biggest people in Fetal Alcohol Research, I will be completely abstaining this pregnancy.
The motto of that conference was "Not Even a Drop".
I do feel that they may be a bit extreme and were trying to scare people. However there is a lot of truth behind what they were saying.I am not willing to risk my child having this horrible disease and knowing every day that it is because of something I did.
Did Susan Doctor present at the conference? I've worked with her before, and she's the one who put on the training I attended
https://www.nofas.org/ This website has a ton of great resources, they are the people who led the conference. They actually had a girl there who brought her son. She said that she only had a few glasses of wine her whole pregnancy because her OB said it was okay. She was bawling her eyes out the whole time talking about it.
I work with a lot of moms who did drink during their pregnancy, and I can back up that research and say that I see a strong correlation between substance use while pregnant and learning disorders. Almost every single one of my children who have come from moms who drank during pregnancy are diagnosed on the Autisim Spectrum, have ADHD or ODD and sometimes all 3.
Just curious, what is the average socio-economic position of the women you work with? It may be related to drinking, or it may be related to other factors. Children from lower socio-economic groups tend to have higher rates of these disorders (I'm going off of memory, don't have a source) and women from these groups tend to have higher rates of substance use and abuse, but there are many other factors that could contribute such as lack of proper nutrition, proper prenatal care, etc.

I had a glass or two with both of my boys, in the 3rd trimester....with this pregnancy, I'm 32 years old, and I've decided I'm not going to at all. I drink a cup of coffee in the morning and a coke in the afternoon and I just don't see the point in having a glass of wine when I already drink caffeine. We tried hard for this baby, I just don't want one more thing to worry about you know? We worry about caffeine, deodorant, shampoo, nail polish, lotion, ect. I figure I can go 10 months without alcohol, caffeine, not so much!
We aren't big drinkers anyway, we are so busy doing other things, we have fun and its not alcohol involved. We also have 2 sons and they keep us quite busy.
All of that being said I don't judge others that do have a glass of wine, like I said I did before, just in my old age of 32 I've decided against it
Myth: My doctor said its fine to have a glass of wine or two while pregnant.
Your doctor is misinformed. Unfortunately, many doctors are not properly educated about this issue. ACOG, The American College of OB/GYNs,
advises women to not consume any alcohol while pregnant. Some doctors
tell women that it’s OK to drink a little wine because they would prefer
to avoid causing a potentially uncomfortable social interaction.
ACOG is in the business of covering their ass.

@kristy774 it's a little depressing that you think 32 is old. I'm 31 and pregnant with my 1st (and 2nd). 32 is not old at all and it isn't until 35 that they even start to watch you more.
I'm sure you didn't mean anything by that comment but there are a few 40+ ladies on here.

Your baby eats and drinks what you do. Would you give them wine after they were born? Unlikely. Our selflessness started the day we conceived or should have.

All the ladies in my family have had their babies at age 32+ going back to my gram. There was a story on the today show when I was 22 that looked at things parents could do to raise honors students. They looked at SAHM vs working moms, mommy and me programs etc but the only thing that improved the kids chances of being in an honors class was having parents that had them after the age of 30. Part of the reason for this is that many people who wait to have kids have reached a higher education level and may be more financially stable than younger parents. As a 22 year old I thought that 30 was so old but now I am happy to be expecting my first child to be born a few months after my 32 birthday. I know a lot of great moms who had babies when they were in their 20s but I can say we are so much more financially stable than we would have been four or five years ago.
Oh- and my mom enjoyed the occasional glass of wine while pregnant with me and I graduated from a prestigious college. No LD here... I'm with Gwyneth Paltrow on this issue.
When the Lord closes a door, somewhere He opens a window.
Even if I did have a sip of wine I wouldn't enjoy it. I will wait patiently until there isn't a baby in my belly anymore. I have the rest if my life to drink as much as I want...

Of course they aren't going to promote any drinking during pregnancy.
I would also have to believe alcohol consumption on a whole is in decline compared to the 40s - 70s when we had little to no research on this and women drank like fish...
Personally, I think a glass of wine here or there at any point during pregnancy is fine. So do the folks that publish the International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, who recently stated that a woman is "safe" to have one glass of wine everyday during pregnancy. I haven't had any wine yet, but I fully intend on having a glass maybe once a week once I'm in my second tri.
Your baby eats and drinks what you do. Would you give them wine after they were born? Unlikely. Our selflessness started the day we conceived or should have.
This is true, but your body also digests and metabolizes A LOT before your baby gets it, including small amounts of alcohol...it's not like the food is shooting straight to the baby. If that were the case, then no one should take one sip of soda, eat fast food, drink coffee or anything at all in fear that their baby was digesting it.
@stasi I mean I get the desire to want to drink, but I mean can't we just wait? You are right though. Every time I drink coffee I actually am being selfish:/ it seems extreme but I'm 32 and now my life revolves around making a healthy baby. I just don't see the point of a glass of wine.

@maymac18 And that's fine, I don't think abstaining all together from wine is a bad thing, and if that what a mom needs to do to feel the best about her pregnancy, then that is perfectly acceptable!
Just don't compare drinking a glass of wine while pregnant to giving your baby a glass (or even a sip) of wine, because that's completely ludicrous and false. It also strongly insinuates that mother's who do choose to have a drink of wine while pregnant are akin to someone who abuses children...because really, if you fed an infant wine, wouldn't that be considered child abuse...
added: AND for the record. I don't know what your age has to do with anything, but I'm 31, and this isn't my first time at the rodeo (see the picture below) so I think I know what sacrifice and selflessness it takes to create another human being!
You guys need to chill. The point of an opinion thread is to give one but don't go crazy on others. My age has a lot to do with it bc I'm def different than I was at 25. For the record, and I didn't think I had to go there, but 90mg of caffeine cannot be compared to any amount of alcohol. Come on now.

You don't make insinuations about how a woman carries and raises her baby without people getting their feathers ruffled.
Plus, if you make asinine, ridiculous comments - like you keep making then you will get people's attention
I think alcohol consumption, as with everything else when you're pregnant (and not pregnant) really comes down to the simple rule of don't be a complete dumbass. I drank with both previous pregnancies, about half a glass of wine with Italian food because pasta is heavy and wine is delicious. I'm also a sloooow drinker. I never even felt it, and I'm a pretty small person. If I'm not even getting a buzz from the drink, there's no way my baby is getting much of anything after my body metabolizes the wine. Throughout history there have been cultures where diluted wine and beer were the only safe things to drink because the water supply was dirty. Alcohol has been a part of the dining experience since the beginning of civilization. It's only very recently that women have been told NO ALCOHOL AT ALL NONE. Have the occasional small glass of wine if you want one, and don't be a dumbass.
Ummmm....I for one think some people need to chill I got quite the response for using the term "in my old age" that I meant as a joke and I still don't know how that was offensive to anyone so um yea, some people need to chill.

correlation does not equal causation. I'm also curious as to your typical clientele.
Our typical clientele is typically low income, single parent. So yes, there could be a number of factors. After hearing that at the conference, I started paying more attention to mom's who admitted to using while pregnant and their children, and I definitely noticed a strong correlation compared to those who didn't admit to it. You are correct, correlation does not equal causation. But there is a strong correlation, compared to moms who are also single, low income and swear that they didn't use anything while pregnant.
It is shocking and horribly sad what some of these mom's will admit to you with no remorse. We had one mom comment that all of her kids are severely mentally retarded/have a whole number of other issues, followed by..."that's probably because he was swimming in Jack D. for 9 months" with a giggle at the end! Then followed by "I home school all my kids"!!! AHHHHHHHHHH

You implied that those who choose to imbibe while pregnant are selfish...people are going to respond to that. If you don't want to drink for the next 9 mo, awesome. But don't knock others who do so responsibly, especially when they aren't doing anything to harm their babies.
It is really important to remember that these remendations are for one serving-which is only 4 Oz. Most Americans pour wine glasses with 8-12 Oz (or more). Personally I wouldn't risk it, although this trend would have been nice to know about during my 2 pregnancy when all I craved was red wine, I maybe would have allowed an occasional glass over the holidays.
I'm a major wine drinker (when I'm not pregnant) and I'm surprised by all these huge serving sizes! Are people really filling up like a pint glass with wine???
Mama to a little girl born July 2011 and a little boy born April 2014!
I have a heavy hand with wine when I'm not pregnant. But yeah, most people are shocked if you show them a correct 4oz pour. I bartended at a chain restaurant and we did 4oz pours and the customers would often complain!
